There was a lot of new construction at the time, Jean Luc Goddard, filmed those buildings to give a futuristic effect. The actor for the main character is American and he acted with no makeup to look older and hard boiled. The main character, Lemmy Caution is from British fiction made to be an American character and in France at the time pulp fiction heroes were very popular.
