Just think, not only would you have to terraform, but breed...for the sake of humanity, of course. ;) Honestly, the first actual settlers would be the top in thier scientific fields.

Kind of reminds me of Armitage the Third. I would go to Mars as a one way trip because if you spend too much time there it will be one anyway. There is a thin atmosphere and no magnetic field to protect you from solar flares and cosmic radiation like earth. That also means a compass will not work there, so you have to setup a GPS network first which is easy now. Like in Armitage, cities would have to start underground to sustain populations until terraforming and better radiation shielding is invented. There are also magnetic and radiation hot spots on the surface so there is likely uranium there for nuclear power or perhaps a new radioactive element we have not seen yet. The stars in the sky would be brilliant with no light pollution so you could see the milky way band and other closer galaxies with the naked eye. I would have no problem exploring and building infrastructure ahead for future generations until I checked out. It is more than worth it.

I sign up, but never heard back. The sign up was like last year. My thoughts on it there would eventually be two way travel back and forth. I find it great that we are final getting to Mars. Unless we develop a magical recycling technique that reclaims anything 100% and invent free energy we have to get off Earth before we exhaust it's resources. Then within a billion years we better be doing interstellar travel because our sun as it dies will likely turn into a red giant star and they estimate it would expand in size to the orbit of Mars vaporizing all but the outer most planets. Returning to the Moon and working on Mars and using the Asteroid Belts will be good goals to develop the technologies for those next steps.

Mars doesn't interest me as a place to live. The issue lies in the fact that the atmosphere is thin, unbreathable, the landscape is devoid of life, air pressure is significantly lower which means without pressure suits humans would expand like balloons. Creating an earth like atmosphere there is going to be impossible because Mars lacks a magnetic field, so the atmosphere will be constantly assaulted by the solar wind. So no. Venus is a little more attractive, assuming humanity finds a way to convert the sulfuric acid into an inert form as humans could live in the sky, cities floating would be possible due to intense ground air pressure, again the air pressure is earthlike, no acid rain, so that only thing you'd need would be a large supply of an alkaline element to spread into the atmosphere to make the sulfuric acid inert. Gravity is also much, much more similar to Earth, so less bone loss, and it receives a lot more solar energy, so plants and trees would more easily survive.
