This is what turns me off to a lot of anime

Mine is the opposite of what brina2123 is saying. I can't take it when a dude has no backbone as is just dependent on the female character. Rather than them both being strong and awesome characters. Dog Days is one of those animes I can read/watch and Kenichi the strongest Disciple.

Harems. I find them extremely... distasteful. Don't get me wrong, I can see the appeal, but they aren't my cup of tea. Also, extremely sexualized shows. I don't mind if there's sexual content in anime, but a good percentage of the time, it's unnecessary. (There's a time and places for everything.) Another one is lack of character development. I don't mind if a character starts out weak as long as they make progress.

I really dislike the harem anime where there isn't too many likeable characteristics of the male protagonist to justify all the girls loving him.

I wonder why harems are so popular in Japan. So many people here seem to hate them.

Harem haters are a loud minority. :P HAREM IS LOVE! HAREM IS LIFE~!

I'm fine with some fan service but sometimes it dumbs dine the whole thing if it too much. Like high school of the dead it would have been a fine story on it's own but all the fanservice makes it almost annoying to watch :c

Oh man... Shows that are nothing but a terrible mix of fan service and clichéd characters. Also, melodrama. I know it's a Japanese thing, but anime has gotten way too melodramatic these past few years. I just wish... anime could go back to the way it was... (looks out window. Sheds tear)

I can't stand ecchi anime when the ecchi stuff is there for no reason other than just to be ecchi. There's some exceptions but for the most part, I personally avoid them. I also usually get turned off from "moe" stuff, or like those kinds that have no story line and that episodes are sort of random. Like Lucky Star. They don't hold my interest.

I hate when they are too formulaic and predictable and use excessive fan service to make up for poor writing or animating. Harem shows seem to do it a lot. You have to understand the primary target audience is a country of males where nearly 25% of all of them are virgins for life which is why their population is contracting at a rapid pace alarming their government.
