Becoming a citizen of another country?

perrythewutt
So, say you become awfully attached to the person of the opposite sex and things begin getting serious to some extent, would you (say if you lived in US) become a canadian citizen (or Vice versa) in order to be with that person?

I'm always nervous about that honestly... Cause what happens if you make the jump for that and it doesn't work out..... I always ask myself this- are you ready for this? Are you willing to leave family and friends and go somewhere that you don't know nor have family to help if you need it? What are you gonna do if it doesn't work out even 3 years later- stay or move back? Myself personally, only place I'm ready to move to is Tokyo....

It would have to take me a lot of time and a lot of trust in order to pull a stunt like this, knowing me I probably would provided I felt the person was worth a trip and moving all my crap somewhere to be with them. I can say if things don't work out then no sweat off my back I'll just adapt to where I am and go from there. Never a bad thing to be a cautious thinker but it also is never a bad thing to take risks.

I would suggest going for a week or weekend whenever you can and be with that person to see how things would work out. That way you dont have to move right when you begin talking to the person. I used to do that back in the day and I went like every 3rd weekend out of the month for quite awhile before deciding to move. Which by the way I was not the one that move she moved to me back then.

That really depends and honestly that kind of thing does make me very nervous - especially when it comes to someone from a country where English isn't the native language or even the second language since I am abysmal at languages in general. Everything else though; experiencing new things, being a part of an entirely different culture amongst different types of people with a change of scenery it certainly sounds interesting. While I would say yes, it's that language barrier that would hold me from moving to non-English speaking countries and it would be too stressful when I can't speak the country's language, I can't rely on my significant other to translate all the time - that just wouldn't be fair. And of course you have that whole leaving family behind thing which is also something that gets to me. It's a very tough question and I just don't know the answer to that yet.

I have literally zero feelings of national attachment for my country. So I guess yes, if the country is good enough to live in.

As a UK passport holder its one of the best passports/citizenship to hold so I would never give it up. Also I would happily get duel citizenship if I wanted to settle in a country but I would not get rid of my original citizenship as it would feel like renouncing what you are.

I would say get a working passport and find a job in the other country. That way you can try living closer or with the other person and can make sure of a final decision if things seem to be working. I wouldn't become a full on citizen on a whim, a short relationship or without knowing anyone else.

I wouldn't say it's impossible, sure. Although I'd have to be preeeeeeeetty dang attached to the person for that to happen.
