Using anime and manga as an escape from depression.

I've struggled with depression for 4 years now, and looking back now I've found my coping mechanism is just to recede from society and watch anime and read manga, as I've found the immersive storylines and sometimes relatable characters take my mind off of my personal problems for a time. Has anyone else found doing something like this has helped them through difficult times? Just wondering.

I can remember when I decided to start studying to go to college, I was going through a rough patch at the time so I had been watching one piece for 6 straight hours. Then luffy said something about doing your best for your friends and families, and I realized if I put in the work I could get a good job and help pay back my mother for supporting me in the past :) your right it does inspire you at times

I do this a lot too but it's kind of evolved into using anime and manga as motivation like it has for you. The way I see it my anime heroes or at least the morals they represent can overcome anything and they're not even real. What kind of man would I be if I never even tried to conquer my own obstacles?

Anime and Video Games helped alot in my teenage years but now its more of my Social Life.
I love to hangout with friends, go to the movies, head to the club or bar, go shopping, go to parties, etc. I also been on a good amount of dates myself and it really helped me build my self-confidence and keep me in check since I am around good friends.

@shinigami232 Yep, anime can be quite inspiring when you least expect it. Life can be difficult, but if anime taught me anything, it's that we need the real world in order to enjoy anime. :S
@jineko Hilarious! I have a lot of anime figures. I don't know if I would consider that waifu or anything like that, but they are pretty nice to look at.
@theCordCutter "What kind of man would I be if I never even tried to conquer my own obstacles?" This. Good on you, dood!

yep *raises hand*. but i know within myself that i should be facing reality (even if its from time to time) 'coz no matter how much i want to live in the anime world (i sound weird! sorry) i can't do that. some of the times tuning myself in anime makes me an introvert. i'm not saying watching anime is bad, though. just that sometimes it's unhealthy for me, it's like running away from the inevitable you know? (sorry if this didn't help you)

I occasionally get depressed. Certain kinds of anime or music will bring me out of it.
