True anime fan or casual anime fan

animeboy
Honestly I've been hearing lots of buzz going around for ppl who are considered true anime fans or just casual anime fans. I've heard ppl say your a true anime fan if you collect figurines,go to cons, watch anime regardless if subbed or dubbed, draw the characters and play anime based games etc. meanwhile a casual anime fan would be someone who only watches dubs(Like myself with VERY few exceptions)watch only shounen based stuff seen on TV, don't collect many figurines if none at all, attend very few cons, if none at all etc. I honestly think this whole labeling of being a true animefan or casual animefan is flat out stupid and elitist. Reason I'm bringing this up is due to another user at the NisAmerica forums that says that your a casual anime fan for, all of the things said above about casuals. This whole Casuals Vs True/Hardcore fanwar needs to stop. It's pretty vexing consistently seeing this everywhere I go on the net, while I've not encountered any of that here for the 2 years of being here, It's just something I wanted the opinions of the members around here. Personally I say we're all fans of anime and that's the bottom line, splitting hairs with all of this elitism is just plain nonsense. My 2 cents.

haha well id rather group em as fanatics and casual, and i dont see anything wrong with the labeling unless someone is trying to be elitists. I consider casual fans those who basically watch a few of the main stream series or just watching w/es on adult swim. Fanatics i would say are the ones who are watching multiple series every season and/or are buying the merchandise

I dont really think much of the fact it seems pointless to me to try to make yourself more surperior just because you watch more anime then one guy or you collect more
akullen
im somewhere inbetween
metaljester
I understand that aku

I'm glad I'm not the only one here who feels this way. Like Akullen I can be in between, but in all honesty I've been called out since, I never been to a convention(I'd love to but money's pretty tight)don't watch subbed anime(With few exceptions) and got no DVD's,Blu Ray,Figurines etc. You see I'm not a rich ass bastard that has the money to spend on all that, I'm busy buying food, taking care of my laptop, and paying for school to buy all of that. I also do watch mainstream anime like Dragon Ball but I also enjoy non mainstream like Panty & Stocking,Lucky Star,Haruhi etc. It would seem that the otaku culture has it's share of you :gotta do this or that and look like this or that: to be considered cool and it's quite nauseating TBH. It makes me wonder if Non otakus hate otakus due to the elitism by some of our fellow brethren?

I would not doubt that tiger

I would say I am a fanatic based on Manic's definition
metaljester
I would consider myself that to but i do have specific animes that im obsessed with naruto being the most noticible one but im sure people can see that on the site by how i talk about him alot in conversations usually i add a reference someways somewhere there and do that or when i see a naruto lover i automatically have to talk to them

I find casual anime fans to be ones that aren't big in the fandom, but watch or read some stuff. I'm more on the fanatic end I suppose since I like collecting merchandise, manga, and DVDs/games. I'll watch sub or dub depending on how it's done. I enjoy talking about it as well, which I find some of the casual type tend to not care for talking about it much.
