you can do time outs and punishments without involving physical violence imo it just shows your child that you can get your way by pushing your weight around, teaches them that violence is a means to control others children emulate their parents after all.

@nebelstern Okay, dude. You're really not too far from Lamby's suggestions then. Are you just disagreeing for personal reasons? Honestly if you set good examples and use relaxation techniques you usually won't have a kid get to that point. Of course raising children is no picnic.

parenting is like a punch if you gave a softer punch to your children than you got from your parents, you did a good enough job

@amir_bahram Oh boy these are funny. I put pennies in the Nintendo for some stupid reason when I was 5 or something. Fried it and I got a bamboo whack across the ass. Another time was when I pushed my sister into the water at some sort of creek when I was 7 or something. He grabbed the nearest branch and I got that across the ass. These were simple punishments and I laugh about them. I look back and say "yeah, I deserved that". Things didn't go out of control until later. I am personally an adherent of moderation. Don't take it too far, but don't go too light. Go too far and it breeds resentment in the kid. Go too light and that child will grow up without a sense of punishment for action. There is a difference between punishment and a full on beating.

What do you mean by things got out of the control?

@kurihado Well when I was around 9 my parents got divorced and punishment turned into actual beatings. Closed fist punch in the gut was what I got for a candy wrapper that missed the garbage can. Dealt with this until I was about 11 and joined up with a local group of hooligans. Still have the switchblade one of them gave me when I was 13. I could deal with the bamboo since I know what I did was wrong. A punch for missing the garbage can and you know that the punishment didn't fit the crime.

This was still from your dad? He took out his divorce stress on you?

Yeah, while his situation sucked that didn't mean that he got to do the things he did. Thankfully he has mellowed out over the years and we are in a decent relationship now.
