Been a little too deep on this topic lately. Happened after my mom and I had a debate. We talked about how she took away Power Rangers from me as a kid because I was being obsessive with it. Given I was just diagnosed with my disability at the time I find it understandable why she had to. She then brought up a similar situation and asked that if I was playing Pokemon and my (hypothetical) wife came into the room and said "you must choose between me or your game." what would I choose? To make long answer short: I told her I wouldn't be in that situation since I see myself in a relationship with someone with similar interests/hobbies to my own.
Since I am still single, this made me think about this. I was wondering if anyone currently in a relationship or had past relationship experience that could give insight into this? Is it bad if relationships are in 1 of the extremes? Why change for someone else? What are some personal pros and cons to being in a relationship with someone with similar interests? What about someone with opposite interests?

The word of the day is "COMPROMISE". You'll never find someone who's exactly like you, they may like things that you don't. However, it's one of those things where you weigh out what's really important and work with everything else. If you get lucky and she loves the same things just as much as you? Awesome. Thing is, that's not always how it works. You learn about each other with each other. You really need to look at what things are deal breakers for you. Like me, for instance, I could never be with someone who wants me to be religious when I am not. However, if they can deal with the fact that I'm not and it doesn't effect thier fundamental values, it might work. Hobbies are not usually necessities, core values and who the person is, are.
Edit:
I take that back... Common interests are important as far as having things to talk about/do. Just don't limit yourself to things only you like and be receptive to try things together that maybe you haven't considered.

i like a mix of similarities and differences, i hate the in-between. compromise implies neither party is happy. i like having a strong independent identity in a relationship, i never want to become too consumed in it that i feel like it's drastically changing my lifestyle. one or two similar hobbies and similar political/philosophical values are all i really ask for, anything else is something new about that person to discover everyday.

Tbh “opposites attract” is a pretty toxic mindset. I don’t think one necessarily has to have the same hobbies but if you intend on staying in a long term relationship your values and goals should be the same.

My brother is a poor man's son working as a truck driver who enjoys his quiet life surfing, fishing, and farming.
His wife, born to a wealthy family and a trust fund baby, spends most of her time working as a self employed home decorator and wedding planner. Hobbies include coordinating social gatherings and hosting large extravagant parties.
Tell me how they have stayed married 10 years?
