The author of Fruit Basket successfully adapted one Chinese folktale which “explains” why cat isn’t included in the 12 Chinese zodiac signs. 12 zodiac signs = 12 earthly branches (十二地支）. This theory was founded 4000 years ago or so when people here weren’t familiar with cats that later became our helpful pets. Back then, the word/Chinese character for cat/猫/狸 referred to wild cats belonging to the cat family. Also tiger as a big cat is listed in the 12 zodiac signs.
