No one true way or set of "They must do or say these things..." rules. Just follow your gut or step out of your comfort zone and just take a change. Worst case, no reciprocation and you learn a lesson for the next time.

Just be prepared for sudden change of interest one day they're interested in talking saying all kind of things then next day they don't even know you exist

from my experience if theyr shy around you, have a hard time making eye contact, are nicer to you than their other friends, try and touch you as much as possible without being rapey this guy in highschool who liked me would try and hug me anytime he could, and id always fight him off was a fun thing we did anyways, thats my experience
