"A bird? Mimicking my own voice perfectly?" Felrein scratched his head in confusion. It was difficult to see the animal in the dark of night. Standing still he listened for more sounds from it. After some time passed and the bird made no more sounds he spun back around and double timed it through the thick foliage. Bushes lined with thorns pricked his skin while imbedding themselves into the threads of his clothes for added discomfort. "Blasted nature! This blows more than the bellows of a furnace!" Trying desperately not to trip over the roots of a tree he kept traveling as far as he could go without stopping until his legs gave out right outside the woods in an open meadow.

Looking up to the sky he could see it was beginning to become lighter as the sun rose. Still hungry and dying of thirst Felrein looked about for anything that might be edible in the field. A variety of brown mushrooms had spread themselves amongst the tall grass. Taking a chance out of desperation he tried a few. They weren't great, but it was the fastest thing for a snack. Up the way was a slow moving stream that he could scoop some water from. To add to his luck he spotted what appeared to be a tree that bore some kind of fruit. Many of the fruit were spotted looking and past ripe, however it was worth trying. "Seriously hope I don't get sick eating all this wild fruit and fungi. Just so incredibly weak right now from hunger..." The sun continues to rise on a new day as Felrein forages for breakfast.

As he was picking low hanging fruit off the limbs of the nearby tree there came a sound of buzzing. The low hum of rapidly beating wings emanated from none other than a honey bee! Where there was one bee more were sure to exist nearby. Observing the tree in greater detail he eventually noticed a nest. Licking his lips, "I could go for a smackerel of honey!" Decidedly Felrein begun to devise a plan to get passed the bees.

After searching the meadow, Felrein found a large stone to hurl towards the hive from a distance. When the nest fell to the ground a number of the bees swarmed like locust over it. Keeping his distance he prepared to wait near the stream just in case the bees decided to retaliate. That however never came to pass. Next he took a large wooden branch with him as he creeped near the downed nest. The idea was to roll it slowly away from the tree back towards the water. If he was careful enough he might get lucky and not be stung too much if at all. Had he the means to make a fire, Felrein would have simply used the branch as a makeshift torch to smoke them out, but this approach would have to do.

Meticulously he rolled it all the way to the edge of the water. Then picking it up gently he dunked it a couple times into the stream to try and flush out any remaining bees inside. The queen was more than likely still alive inside also so he needed to be careful. Once Felrein was confident in clearing out further hazards from the nest he broke it apart to find any honey combs. Taking some he devoured it like candy! It was a bit soggy from the water, but still tasted delicious. Way better than the mushrooms! However as he was having this snack a sudden interloper appeared. A rather large and furry problem!

In the stream was an adult bear fishing. Spotting Felrein covered in blood and honey his scent lured it closer. Sniffing the air the bear grunted before picking up speed towards him! "I can't catch a break, huh!" Picking up the large stick Felrein swings it wildly trying to intimidate his pursuer. The bear however doesn't back down! With a quick paw it swats the branch away easily. It's becoming apparent he needs to find something else to distract the animal. "Hey, look it's your favorite! Honey!" Laying a piece of honey comb in front of himself, Felrein backs up slowly. For a moment it seems to work long enough to put several yards in between the two.

Once Felrein was far enough from the hungry bear he turned in the opposite direction and hurried towards the nearest hill. Climbing the steep incline he stopped to look out into the distance. For once he spots something that looks like a hamlet. "It's not that impressive and I can't be sure they've got the care I require, yet its better than nothing!" Smiling at the thought of finally reaching someplace that could help, the travel weary man hobbled down the slope. Then at the edge of the modest settlement Felrein called out for emergency assistance! A middle-aged man who was doing work outside his cabin notices. Carefully engaging with the out-of-towner, the guy looks over Felrein to better understand the situation. With a voice of genuine concern, "Geeze, the heck happened to you young fella? Looks like you're seriously injured there!"

"Yes I am." Felrein barely answered having had little rest since last night. "It's been a terrible night of me escaping through the forest after being kidnapped by someone wearing a mask! I've not had anything to eat except what I could find in the woods. Do you have anyone that's proficient in medicine too? Think I've got some broken ribs..." With a ragged cough Felrein looks to be getting worse with his health. The man he's speaking with takes pity leading him to another cabin. Upon arriving Felrein's acquaintance knocks on its door. "Winsloe! I got a guy from outside our settlement in bad shape! Think you can take a look at him?"

The sound of creaking floorboards can be heard as someone approaches before opening the door. The man that appears on the other side is a stout gentleman wearing bifocals. His sleeves are rolled up and inside his vest pocket looks to be an assortment of writing utensils along with scraps of paper. "Who's this you've brought me, Edgar?" Winsloe asks with a concerned look. "I didn't ask his name, but I found him calling out for help over by the hillside." Stopping to look back over at Felrein Edgar then asks, "What did you say your name was again?" "Felrein, sirs..." Continuing to Winsloe, "Right so Felrein here came down from the hill outside our village by my cabin. As you can plainly tell this boy looks all kinds of beat up! Perhaps if you're able could ya look him over?"
gabriel_true
Behind Winsloe came additional voices. A family was already inside waiting for him to finish with them. "Give me a few to get done with the Bradbury's boy. He fell from a tree this morning while climbing and fractured an arm." Turning round Winsloe motioned them inside. Entering Felrein could see an open room with several long tables covered in cloth with a pillow for a person's head. A couple beds were by the far corner with a thick linen sheet separating them for makeshift privacy. On one of the tables sat a boy less than 10. He was the Bradbury's only child. The boy's left arm was in a sling. Tear stains could be made out below his puffy red eyes. "It still hurts!" he cried.
