Anyone else think people are afraid to talk about anime? Like it's some sort of nerdy thing. I watch anime because it has some of the best story lines in any show I've seen. Why is it such a hush hush subject ?

People make fun of what they don't understand. My friends don't get it, but they don't give me a hard time for liking it. Insecure people call anime lovers nerds.

Most people just have a stigma towards it, so people already have a bad opinion and make no attempt to see for themselves. I had a friend who always said he would never watch anime, I made a bet he'd enjoy one of my choosing. (Chose one punch man). He admitted it was good and now is watching more of my recomendations

I'm not as timid about talking about it like I was 5 years ago or back when I was getting into it in High School. Feels like Anime is now a part of Pop Culture like Superheroes and Comic Books are, since its more accepted, at least in California, I don't know how it is in other States or Countries. But I feel everything sorta bloomed in 2012 when The Avengers was released (Not Anime I know) but when that Movie came out, alot of people either became fans or saw it as part of the culture, because before then, liking superheroes was ridiculed and looked down on. As to me I just know when or when not to talk about it or who to talk to about it, if that makes any sense. If someone brings it up, I'll talk about it or if I notice that they have something anime related, I'll comment on it and try to initiate a conversation
But to answer OP directly its like most people already answered: Stigma, they don't understand there's more to it, think it's something childish.

People are starting to check things out a little more at least. Since Netflix announced they were making a Death Note movie, a few people I know checked out the anime and really liked it.
