'Cool Kids can't/don't watch anime'

Idk I hear this alot and it's annoying, I hate it. My highschool mingled. Almost everyone from every Group mingled with one another. I was in band and chorus and theater but I also played lacrosse and got invited to huge parties. When I mention that I like anime, manga, and that I cosplay (or try to) I get the same statements: - Really ? You don't look like you like anime. - Anime is for white people. - Anime is for weird people and you aren't weird. - Does that mean all you watch is hentai ? - You don't look like a nerd/ I'd never guess cause of the people you hang out with/ you're really popular. Idk I just hate hearing it. What does my popularity have to do with my interest ? What does my race have to do with my interest ? I don't talk about my anime interest unless you're a close friend, because I honestly get tired of feeling judged for the fact that I like something that isn't Americanized. I just hate hearing the whole 'you have to be weird/ you're too popular to like anime.' statements Any thoughts ?

Don't give a damn. Not one person in high school who took issue with me is at all important to me anymore. Live your life and don't bother with people who give you shit for liking anime or assume that you're some weirdo for it. And if they're still stupid enough to think anime is for weirdos despite knowing that you enjoy anime and are not a weirdo then they really aren't worth worrying over. You do you and stick to people who respect you and your hobbies.

the koolest kids in highschool were the ones who never cared what others liked or didnt like while that can sound hard as highschool is just shoving abunch of insecure kids in a building, just do what makes you happy and remember YOU WILL NEVER SEE ANY OF THOSE PEOPLE AGAIN IN YOUR LIFE so it doesnt matter what they think

Well your in school and some kids in High school and College will still judge. Just wait till your last year of college and maybe some will stop questioning about it. I also hear the same thing as well, especially from people who I play sports with.

I was in high school just as anime was getting known (2008 graduate). In high school, as long as you weren't pushing it on others, it doesn't matter. As I'm getting older, it's becoming more and more concerning and having to hide it. On the other hand, it's becoming easier to me to talk about cosplaying as I get older as it's a series of skills I can use. 'Costuming' is seen as much less of a negative thing as watching "cartoons for children." While I understand that anime is certainly not specifically for kids, it has that stigma so it's something that is judged more harshly.

People are seemingly incapable of believing that people can be interested in anything regardless of appearance, status, etc. I was actually very popular back when I was in school yet I was very open about the things I love - perhaps to a fault as I exposed myself as the biggest dweeb but I'm proud of what I'm into and thankfully the vast majority of people were really nice and accepting of the things I enjoy simply because they liked me for I am. Of course you're going the get the occasional arsehole who will try to belittle you but for me it was often the people who nobody liked and while I didn't give a damn what they said, it was nice to have people backing me up and accepting my eccentric nature. I'm very lucky in that regard and it frustrates me how people aren't as nice as those back in my school - despite that though, there's a very solid chance that someone will accept you for who you are regardless of the things you're into. Unless you're a serial killer of course.

Pretty sure I know the answer... It's because of all the slapstick that leads to unrealistic portrayal of social interactions. Anime is like intentional made to be different from the social norm. Slapstick examples: Example 1: Sakura punches Naruto and sends him flying into buildings after he says something stupid. (does that really happen irl?) Example 2: Unnecessary screaming and blabbering that is often used as comic relief. (doesn't happen IRL) Example 3: Fan service (big boobs and harems) Since that is the majority of anime, I can see why the public thinks anime is uncool. And for that reason, they will avoid anime altogether, even the good ones. On top of all that, most dubbed anime are tailored towards kids, especially in Canada. Due to the audience, there is often a lot of language filters that make dialogue sound awkward and a lot of childish plots.

American high schools baffle me, lol. Liking anime/manga was never an issue for me during school. Everyone knew, nobody cared.

was never really an issue for me neither xynomi some kids would always ask what i was reading and would be like "mangos?" but that was it alot of the anime fans in my school were pretty cool
