The greatest example of fan service improving the anime: Kill La Kill. Best use of fan service to actually drive the plot and create a beautiful allegory of self awareness. Senketsu and Junketsu for ever.

I like well done fan service. Well done example being Samurai Girls. BAD fan service is Rosario Vampire where it's esentially the same thing over and over again. Gratuitous bath scenes always welcome! (Example: High School of the Dead)

Continuing on comments from the last page and my other comment, I had to think about it a bit, but one show I think fanservice had a negative affect on was Code Geass R2. Unpopular opinion, but I actually liked the first half (R1) of the show better. The fan service randomly amped up at the beginning of the second season to the point of being overly distracting and borderline obnoxious at points. While it wasn't the only problem (wacko character development, erratic plot developments, filled), I thought it was a decent example of fan service becoming distracting and hurting a show. Still, a good show, just. It as much as season 1.

If done right, the fanservice can work wonders and add more enjoyment to the anime. Good example: Ben-To The fanservice didn't bother me at all, and in fact I quite enjoyed. If however it is done poorly and only for the sake of ''hey boobs sell'' then it can ruin the mood. Great example: K. Absolutely beautiful anime, but for whatever reason, they thought that there was need for boob shot, well just because they wanted a boob shot. It didn't add anything to it and felt forced TLDR: I have mixed feelings of fanservice
