@veruassault Actually that story is never intended to be literal: it's an aligory with a lesson about friendship, Determination and something else. It's a story told in most Sioux and Algonquin Tribes, I haven't personally never heard that story since i was a little guy, anyway it does involve a muskrat and he attempts to save his friends, he ends up dying in the process. anyway- the story is never intended to be literal, it is but one of many creation stories told to some of the youth.

Personally i believe catfishing is a derivative of people feeling insecure with their present selves and need something that separates them from the already big selection of potential romantic interests out there. I knew this one guy whom tried to catfish my ex-girlfriend, Turns out i actually did what he was claiming to do and when i gave him the Questionaire: he failed miserably. Honestly Catfishing only makes you look like a dick and a bonafide loser when you get caught.

@Uninterested. ACTUALLY... I'm not talking about that one ^_^ This is the one I was referring to http://www.firstpeople.us/FP-Html-Legends/TheCreationStory-Iroquois.html

^I agree with the above (Uniterested's Post) Makes me wonder however, would you consider someone who is transgender (and isn't up front about it) to be catfishing? Even if the pictures they are uploading is of themselves and hell even offline., there is the stigma of them not being biological born as the gender they Identify as. I've been guilty of this in the past (On Steam and Language forums), being too insecure of the stigma I usually held off telling anyone of the circumstances of my gender until I got to know them, in my experience of the 20+ people I told only 2 hung around, I won't lie it stung and made me feel exactly that a dick and a loser but I think it gave me lesson in confidence and to be honest as I possible can to people and I got 2 best friends I'd die for out of it. Whether or not I was Catfishing I don't know. But all I can say is that being 100% honest with people is much better than pretending to be something your not.

yer I don't think anyone really reviles there gender while gaming I really don't think anyone really cares your there to play a game despite your avatar being male or female side not who coined the term catfish and what relation dose that even have to portending your something your not surly a Chameleon would have been a better term as they can change there spots so to speak at the drop of a hat

@Veruassualt Yeah that one is another story that takes place after the one i just mentioned, Not to be taken literal ofcourse, but the thing is each tribes stories we're often shared between tribes when they would host pow wow's or ceremonies. akmost all tribes would meet a certain places every year or two to commence such a gathering and such, also to let the younger ones talk and meet one another. to prevent inbreeding ofcourse. Anywho- yeah i heard that one or the way it was told to me was different but i vaguely remember it. Was told to me by an elder from the anishinabe people when i was a younger lad. update: as i recall im pretty sure that one has to do with something about earth and a certain degree of respect towards it. then again i only read half-way through so day before remembering it, But there is always an allegory for every story or some form of lesson. although stories are mean to be vague, to see if the listener could find another lesson on top the one thats obviously being conveyed and no two-stories are the same, Stories change aswell as the lessons with them

@tylor, On the Contrary: There was a friend i had a few years back whom i met on Xbox and added me because my voice was glorious and i was funny, but anyway-- At the time i knew them they we're a "Girl" whom went by the Name Lyda and after awhile she revealed to me that she was actually a guy whom always felt he was a girl and identified as one online, like he had this entire story with her and said that she was the real him, i thought of it as weird, but he did say he felt better when he was her... He recieved alot of attention: dispite him not even talking. I don't talk to the dude anymore though, but he did say he seen an older brother figure in me or something, which is why he shared. I later then lectured him because he did use it once to manipulate other guys for stuff, surprisingly: This stuff happens all the time online, You just don't notice it, i met two people like that so far, The second was much worse.

@tylor i think catfish is the perfect name for the person because a catfish is a fish with whiskers and all it looks similar to a cat which give it the name but at the end of the day its a fish @sherflow hiding that your transgender is totally fine it isnt lying tbh you just withheld the information...i mean yeah its wrong cause if you know the person is straight and fell for you but your a boy your kind of toying with them...but it isnt like you pretended to be someone else thats you 100% not some other person. i still feel like you should tell the person rather than they find out the hard way
