Most of the people I've gotten close with on this site have pics of anime characters as their profile pic (myself included). But I do know how they look because I've gotten to know them and eventually we added each other on Facebook, skype, etc. And our friendships lead to some of us actually meeting in person at cons and such. We also use to video chat on Tiny Chat, which we recently continued doing. You're welcome to join by the way.

Side question - how do you keep the site from resizing pictures? I think profile pictures work the best here when there is something real to look at. I prefer to have an idea of who I am talking to. Also that was a good point of the gallery being the benefit for everyone else. The main picture could be for you but even when sharing pictures about you they are for the benefit of everyone else.

I realize if the images are not a standard size like they are elongated from an HD phone IE, It squashes it to make it fit or rotates the image... I usually add slack in Photoshop to kinda square off the image so the scaling doesn't become abstract.
