The ones before 1990 were not that incredible except for maybe "Astro Boy."

I'd consider anything from the 1980 to mid 90's to be "old school"; Akira, Macross (or the Robotech series), Cyatonenden Teyandee, Cats Eye, Lupin, Sailor Moon, Nausicaa, or Totoro for example, while shows like Jungle King/Kimba the White Lion, Speed Racer, Mazinger Z, Galaxy Express and Yamato would be more classical anime.

I think old school is before 2000's, like Evangelion, Trigun, or the movie Akira. I think its just the style before the 2000's.

I think its more of a semi complex thing. That can be determined either by a major shift in tropism, animation style, or simply the age. Id say after 2006 you see a change in anime but 2000 did set up a greater divide between how anime is made. P.s. most anime is still handdrawn
