Japanese learning tips

axel_ayumi
I'm taking Japanese at my university right now and there are people who are a bit more experienced at it. Are there any tips to help me catch up?

Make friends that speak Japanese. There is a website called meetup.com, I met many friends by going to a Japanese language and cultural exchange group. It's a good way to practice speaking and listening, they will teach you things, you will teach them things, and you will learn a lot. At this stage I wouldn't suggest karaoke, but once you start getting familiar with kanji, definitely try out Japanese karaoke. FLASH CARDS!!! Use Anki Deck. Put in words that you need to learn as flash cards, anki will show you how you are doing and even know when to give you a break. While learning Japanese through anime and manga sounds fun, you will find that some of their speech and words they use are not appropriate for real life. Don't rely on manga and anime, but it is a fun way to keep studying. Don't be too proud to ask for help. If help is available, make sure to take advantage of it. You never know what you may learn if you don't ask. Wouldn't it be embarrassing if you were saying something wrong for the longest time and nobody told you? It's okay to be wrong, too. Just remember, you are a language learner and be open to constructive criticism. :) I hoped I helped some. I will probably come up with more suggestions! Congrats on starting your language learning journey, がんばって!!!

You already stated the key word here. "Experience". Speak speak speak and speak. even if you sound weird, you gain confidence through the act of practicing. You don't learn to ride a bicycle just by studying how to do it. If you have no one to talk to, talk to yourself (just don't do this forever).
