So I did it, the $3.50 sign up for a premium membership. I'm the real deal, or I should say, "The Full Metal". Okay I'm not. $3.50 is not enough for a Chipotle burrito so why not spend it here? But lets just pretend I'm hosting an awesome greeting, complete with yokai and humans gathered together for fun without trying to kill or capture each other. Or we can choose to see the reality of this post as that it is 1:30 am and after reading a good graphic novel I can't go to sleep so here I am wanting to step out from the window seat at the back of the classroom and meet my fellow classmates.
Me: About five years ago in veterinarian technician school I noticed a girl in front of me had an awesome looking character on her laptop screen. Since that simple question, "Who is that?" (it was Kurama from Yu-Yu Hakusho) From then on I have been learning about the great stories contained with anime/manga. I started with Full Metal Alchemist, then Bleach and then Yu Yu Hakusho. After following along those series I realized the emotional ups and downs that anime/manga can take you on. And I decided I wanted to go on more of those emotional rides.
I graduated from school chatter to using Amazon for reviews and shopping on different sites for the best deals for my new found hobby. However if life has taught me one thing (okay many, but I may have to repeat the course I'm a slow learner) is that in most social circles anime/manga seems to be a social death sentence. Especially a date killer. Find a person you have a crush on, and go up to them and ask them if they too, enjoy the story telling experience of anime/manga. (or even cosplay, though I've not experienced that) You may as well approach such said person in a loin cloth asking to sacrifice their first born to the carne asada god at the bhuro-ito temple in meh-ix-can prefecture.
Hey, I just wanted to place my voice in this world that it is such an amazing experience to be in the audience during a great story being told and it doesn't matter the media format as it does how well the author can tell his story. I feel anime and manga gets the short-end of the stick, kinda like getting a happy meal through the drive-thru and when you get home you find out they forgot to put the TOY inside!!! (Granted, the toys were wicked cool in the 1980s, as was the food, but they suck now so moving on)
It is here then I plant my scepter of communication to share recommendations and opinions on what each of us has experienced. (And save money from buying series we may not enjoy)
Anime has thrown my society burned out mind through the wringer. My god, if you would have ever told me one of my favorite romance series would be about a teenage couple AND deal with Vampires, I'd say I'd double down on that bet because there isn't no way of that happening. (Thank god I don't gamble, that is another thing I suck at)
I'm speaking of Karin (the anime) and Chibi Vampire (the manga) WTH the different name on each one for the same series? GGRRRR....AND don't get me started on the intro, looks like PORN!!! I skipped that series at first because the intro was soo....uumm...well....Didn't look like an epic story was going to be told.....*heh heh heh* I was wrong though, it was EPIC (IMO).
That is just one tiny story out of many I've come across. *sigh* Here is my introduction and all I can think of is Karin, I'm odd what can I say--though not the "Odd Thomas" but he would be pretty cool to hang around I bet. I now have 3 bookshelves filled with anime/manga. Its safe to say I'm in this for life. I'm going to be the coolest old person (if I'm alone/unmarried or if I have kids and they kick me to the old peoples home) at the senior center because I will have the baddest collection of anime and manga that all the employees will want to borrow my sets! I say employees because the fellow senior citizens will probably spill their ex-lax on my books or mistake my anime discs for coffee mug coasters due to their senility!
Of course I won't be senile because I'll still be an avid reader/watcher of stories (good for the mind)! Everyone else will still have their cell phones and ipods hooked up to their IV's so they can get facebook updates on when their neighbor has a bowel movement or when the cafeteria employee Marge has a "first come first serve" on the fruit cups. You get the idea, right? I'll have to help blaze a path for the "Geriatric Anime Club in America" or GACA for short. Heh heh heh.
I really came here just to say hi and introduce myself and here I am rambling. You may think I am quite the social butterfly, but I'm far from it. I'm quite well buried in my cocoon stage. So hello everyone. *bows*
Oh, I've never been to any cons before, or anything cool that involves cosplay or any type of dress up.
And that book I mentioned above that I just finished reading? Volume 8 of the "Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service". An awesome series I recommend to any of you out there reading this. "Mail" is another interesting series that is a hidden gem, IMO.
Oh, as for turn off's in this nook of my life? I really hate when I see people argue about which Japanese/English voice acting is better, stuff like that, ya know? I try and accept that each person experiences the story in their own way. I think, that I'd rather hear plot points or story arcs discussed to learn different points of view from other people then arguing culture voice overs. I mean really, voice over arguments? If you think you look silly, imagine how much more silly you sound to someone who is deaf. Trying to argue sound on a discussion board instead of the story must look pretty petty I'd think. But then again, if your blind, all you would have is the sound to go on sooooo..........Ahh fudge this is where I should go read volume 9 of Corpse Delivery Service, I'm contradicting myself. Goodnight all, nice to meet everyone and may all your bacon burn.

Ahah, "The Full Metal." Good stuff xD
Super long introduction, that's for sure :D But good read none the less. Very cool stuff
Well, yeah - Anime, just as many foreign things have their very own stereo typing that kind of makes it hard to bring it up to others without being judged. Overall it's a good experience, though. :D I myself don't bring it up, but if someone catches me listening to some of my oh so lovable jrock or whatever, sees my phone's lock screen and background, or my laptop's BG and mentions it or brings it up I'm happy to discuss and make conversation with it :D I just more or less try and not start with it - more to go with common ground interests like musics or other 'mainstream' media kind of things. :3 test the waters n' take it from there ahah
It really depends on people I have to say, y'know? Just as we have a preference to Anime, others prefer Manga, some prefer Plays, some books, some to movies, some to audio readings - and it really is just a to each their own kind of thing. That said, it's great to find people who have Anime as a preference : ) The media format does matter, simply due to preference on how it's told in my opinion. The story can be great, but if you appeal to someone who likes to watch movies to 'read the book' it may just not be up their alley, y'know?
There's definitely an audience for everything but I like being open to as much things as I can ahah
I've seen Karin - when it was airing too. It was ADORABLE. MY god, I loved it. I think the nose bleeds were just hilarious, but cute.
Your collection sounds grand! Would really like to sift through it, heheheh. I respect things like that o:
Oh, well technology is such a rapid advancing thing - that'll probably be true in the next 10 years ahahah.
I think that respecting people's preference in how they want to express their love for Anime is important, yeah. I mean, whether the voice acting is good or not - now THAT is something to discuss - but keep the opinions collectively respectable, yeah. : )
Anyway, I do recommend you try going to a con whenever you get a chance in your area! It's a great way to meet locals who like the same stuff after all, and most have super awesome activities and panels! Artist alleys to add to your collection and maybe even guest appearances by people who VA :D
That said, much welcomes to MaiOtaku and wonderful read. Stay active :D
