Cosplaying is one of the best ways to come out of that shell. People love the characters and will come right up to you. The best characters to cosplay are ones you know and have a relatively close stature to your actual self...for me, Future Trunks (DBZ), Dante (Devil May Cry 3), Hei (Darker Than Black) and Cloud and Kadaj (FFVII:AC) are pretty good to work with. My Ed Elric cosplay outfit has been a constant work in progress, but I always get comments that I am too tall (5'10") to be Ed. Most importantly, you have to have fun with the character, that will really show in how you pull off any cosplay. I would contact Sephiroth (his user name in maiotaku) to see if he is going to any conventions of needs folks in Florida. He runs maiotaku. Antoher good person to know is Adam Sheehan with FUNimation. He runs their convention stuff and you can work with FUNi in cosplay and are guaranteed to meet great people.
