Watch "Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere". It's an adaptation of a light novel series of the same name, and it's sure to restore your faith in anime or your money back. It's kinda hard to describe succinctly, but suffice to say the plot and characters are nothing short of masterful. Fair warning though: It's pretty heavy on the infodump. Just one volume of the original novel has more pages than the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, so you can imagine.
