My best advice to prevent this is to learn to be happy when you are alone, realize your actions affect others, don't give up on being happy (especially when you are young), and don't let social norms be your only route to happiness. A woman or man in your life will not guarantee happiness. Be thankful for what you do have and do stuff you want to do even if you are by yourself. Relationships are a great thing, but too much focus on your failures will just make you miserable. Learn from it and move on. You may find you are happier when you worry less about what you don't have and enjoy what is available to you. This man let his bitterness consume him, and detached himself from society.
