YOU CAN READ JAPANESE TOO!? x.x
I respect you 先輩! ;_;
Lishifu @hakutaku His level of Japanese is high~Self-study! That's awesome.
正義の味方 @gundamu It deeeefinitely took a lot of time to memorize enough Kanji to be at the level to read most Japanese texts without referring to a dictionary. Just keep exposing yourself to the language and you'll be fine. I recommend using http://jisho.org/ when you get hung up on specific Kanji. You can actually look Kanji up by individual radicals with that site's search system. You just gotta make sure to not give up. ファイト!
Alfuh @alfuh I'm self-studying too myself! Taught myself all of the 常用 Kanji (was super hyped when I did!) and have been getting into reading native material myself these last 6 months! Although I still admittedly need some time to be able to sit and look over it to fully translate, I am nowhere near native level of 'breeze-through' reading, but one day =D
Alfuh @alfuh Oh I have no problem with Kanji, I'm currently at about 2,600 kanji known and 4,000'ish vocab. I use Memrise to help me do SRS review and keep everything I've learned in my memory as well as help keep track of how much I know so I can feel some sort of accomplishment
Lishifu @hakutaku How many 常用漢字 do you have to memorize? 2000?
Alfuh @alfuh Roughly 2,400. I hear that, to be *native* level I will still need a minimum of over 3k+ to function at 'naturally-read-novels' level, so I'm still pushing through
Alfuh @alfuh @Enki I've pretty much been stuck with manga reading and have strayed from novels, for now, for that reason
Lishifu @hakutaku To collect words/phrases/idioms/漢字? Whatinteresting words/phrases have you found?
正義の味方 @gundamu For me, most of my exposure in reading came from playing JRPGs, Visual Novels, reading Manga and Light Novels more or less. To be perfectly honest I started learning in the first place to be able to consume untranslated Japanese media more or less. :u
Lishifu @hakutaku I collected words by reading visual novels/otome games ก(ー̀ωー́ก)
Alfuh @alfuh @Otaku That's one of the exact reasons why I myself am learning xD I've taken to downloading a lot of older PS1 RPGs like Final Fantasy 8 and the like in raw japanese and playing through them just to get more experience. I have very fond memories with a lot of PS1 games/RPG's, so it really is a great way to get to experience your childhood all over again and really feel like you're learning from scratch just like you were back then
Alfuh @alfuh @Enki Hmm, honestly i haven't run into many words or phrases that were extremely interesting or unique. Probably one of the more interesting ones was 慇懃無礼 (いんぎんぶれい) which is pretty much being *too* polite to the point that it is considered rude or taken sarcastically, which I found interesting x.x
正義の味方 @gundamu It's pretty interesting to go back and play JRPGs that you've played in English before in Japanese. Especially if the English version of said JRPGs had a lot of script and character changes due to localization.
