Mixed opinion about LDR: I think if you're young, it doesn't work. In this age you should explore, challenge yourself and try out new things and eventually you will find out what you like or what's 'your thing'. Having promised someone something overseas will just drag you down, that's my experience at a young age. If you are older, then I think it works. You have seen the world, you know what you want. At least I am very picky, so if someone like this is not available locally, why not look abroad? But it's really a two sided thing, it's not always in your own hands also in your partners'.

What was the worst thing that ever happened to you that triggered you? Seriously it happens a lot to people as it happens to me sometimes our daily and sometimes randomly. But for some people it happens just buy a stroke of luck.
