The goal of Settlers of Catan is to build the most cities & villages, which earn you victory points. You need resources to build, so you build roads to block the other players from building in spots with strategic resources (wheat, sheep, ore, bricks, and wood). If you need resources, you are forced to trade, sometimes with unfavourable prices. There is also robber, which forces a player to drop half their cards, give up one of their resource cards, and stops any resources being given out from a given resource spot.
