I live in Houston and have lived in the SF Bay area and I think people, in my experience, are pretty friendly for large cities. Random people will say hi, how are you?, smile at each other, and observe the social niceties. Haha maybe I've just been really lucky :p

If and when you return, you might try your hand at posting in the forums. It's the best way to get people to notice you and to find others you may be interested in.
