Minecraft Blamed in School Violence Case

drmario
Well........... This sounds like a result of bad parenting + a bit of minecraft influence. It doesn't appear that there was any intended violence, and the court seems to understand that. To me it is plausible that the kid may have gotten the general idea for this from minecraft. And it's actually a good thing for him that they blame minecraft instead of shoving him into the "bad egg" category. Of course, more blame lies with the parents because he should have never been able to leave home with this stuff (or even have access).

There's some imagination at work. I wouldn't expect a judge to know what minecraft has in it anyway, but for someone who doesn't play the game it was close enough of a description.

I've played minecraft. And no blood doesn't mean not violent. I would consider slicing up animals to be a bit violent, and monsters exploding is also violent even if it isn't very "graphic." We're obviously not talking GTA or MK here, but the judge also never said the kid planned to harm other people because of minecraft. I think this is all just blown out of proportion.

And here I thought all computer and video games were blood baths that turn people into violent zombies that stay up all night with a controller in hand.

In terms of the violent content of the game, even the article you sourced doesn't claim it's non-violent, just not to the caliber of GTA and such. Which honestly, isn't quite a good refute, but there you go. Gotta say I'm with drmario on this. I can see how a child can take these items around him and imagine it's a video game he played. Regardless of who is getting the "blame" for this, it's not an entirely inappropriate consequence. I think the minecraft angle is kinda exaggerating the response up more than it needs to be.

i face palmed when i read that article like people (parents mostly) will be so...so....brainwashed by the media to believe this is true like c'mon t's minecraft for crying out loud any person that knows or heard of the game will know that it wont make a child take a gun hammer and a knife (even though 2 of them don't even appear in the game) at the end parent just want something to blame on so they don't have to blame therselfs like dam it i grew up with chuckie, gta, and burnout and i am not doing satanic rituals, shooting hookers or taking my dads car and crashing it into another car at the end it'show the parent educates the child so they don't end up well "mass murdering" other kids in a school or shopping mall so my conclusion is that well is that videogames don't make the violence, violence makes the videogames (modern warfare, gta etc)
