Forum software sometimes eats posts

amezuki
I've noticed that on semi-rare occasions, I will hit post, everything I wrote will disappear, but NOTHING will happen. This just happened with a fairly longish post, and let me tell you, there are few things that will aggravate me faster than having a whole lot of my writing trashed. This is particularly frustrating given the fact that whenever you do successfully post, it still leaves all of the text you wrote in the text box. Moral of the story for everyone else: write your posts in Notepad if you care about them, then copypasta.

...and it just did it again. The exact same thread. Thankfully I used Notepad this time. And oh my god, I just looked at this one other thread about character limits where someone described the same behavior. I am just... appalled. THAT is the failure mode for exceeding the character limit on this forum? SERIOUSLY? That's how it fails--by throwing away your entire post and not even notifying you? I don't even have words for how awful of a user experience that is.

I do absolutely agree. There's an interaction between the forum topic creating and comment posting that for some reason does not translate the "this post was too long" into anything for the user. While I work on that, instead I've changed the post length limit to 10,000 characters.

Thanks, Sephiroth. That'll be very helpful. Sorry if I was short; losing writing really sets me off.

I understand, I've experienced the same thing, so I can completely understand. More free time to improve the programming on this site would be nice, but my "real job" of running cons takes all my time. Need to pay for hosting and advertising somehow though lol.
