Always remember that somebody else has it worse than you. This is something I copied and pasted that I've had to tell the number of my friends on an app that I just had to deal with an hour ago. The story of why I just had to talk my friend down from suicide 50 minutes ago tonight.
"A friend of mine IRL. I met her on this app about a year ago. Her boyfriend dumped her or something and started dating this hoe. She lashed out at the hoe on Twitter recently apparently or I guess Instagram and the girl edited their conversation to make it look like she said that she was fat and disgusting and had to pay guys have sex with her and that she would fuck anything if it's Stood Still long enough. Then she printed off flyers and handed them out around the school campus, College, all of her friends apparently have turned on her as well as the school head not caring for anything other than a paycheck and says he won't do anything about it. Her own mother has disowned her and she was living at a friend's house because she has nowhere else to go at this current moment. She has the original messages but her own mother doesn't care to read them or believe them and just believes that her own daughter is a whore"

Sometimes the whole "somebody else has it worse than you" mentality is damaging. Just because you're drawing in 10 feet of water doesn't dismiss that you're still drowning if somebody else is drowning in 20 feet of water.
I'm sorry you had to talk somebody down from suicide though and I do hope that they are doing okay.

Ahoge,
Exactly. I've had it become a pissing contest damn near anytime problems are discussed. My problems are no less than yours and vice versa. It really lies in perception and fortunately or not, we all perceive things a little differently. Now, that's not to take away from Kid in the least. Suicidal ideation sucks, no matter the cause. Good on you Kid for being such a good friend and helping her out, many don't know what to do and just awkwardly walk away. Years ago on this site no less(I should say from, since we talked not just on here.), I had a very similar situation, it's scary as hell to not be there to deter them and only hope your words will get through to them. You're a good dude in my book, for that. I will say for future reference, if you truly believe the person is wanting to do self harm or suicide, you can call the police and ask them to check up on the person if you know where they live.

@ahoge, yeah thats called gatekeeping and its really pointless and damaging
pain is absolutely subjective
BUT i do think that its good to count your blessings and see that things could always be worse
theres a balance there that needs to be maintained
your pain should be respected, but you should always keep it in perspective

Yeah I guess you guys are right but there are also those people who just wallow in their own self despair saying I have it so much worse so I guess that comment goes out more to those people. Pain is subjective that is true but sometimes people really aren't in that much pain but they just delude themselves into feeling that unless they hear or Worse story but then they still usually try to delude themselves.
I guess I can kind of see your point generally speaking that is about how that phrase can be more damaging but in my experience whenever it's been brought up to me that way or a couple of my friends, the phrase someone always has it worse than you hasn't been damaging at all and it's been used to snap people out of their mood or make them realize that they are just pitying themselves so I guess it depends on the person and the situation regarding the phrase
Edit:
For instance with my mom when she was a little kid or it might have been my dad, I forgot which one, whenever they would get into a mood and complain about how terrible things were for them my grandfather would take them, put them in the car and then drive them out to the very poor side of town and show them how much worse everyone else had it then then and would tell them basically the same phrase. Others have it much worse than you. When I was told this story they did not refer to it as a damaging phrase whatsoever and actually regarded it as a positive experience positive. A sad one but also eye-openingly positive

I confess I dipped a potato chip into my mashed potatoes and the only thing missing from the experience was a french fry on top.
