Yes. My Japanese ex-girlfriend from so many years ago even taught me a phrase for it when we were going through that point: 友達以上恋人未満 (tomodachi ijou koibito miman). Literally, "more than friends / less than lovers". You might sleep together, or be intimate in some other way, and there is an emotional connection there that is more than simply a "fuck buddy", but you're not in any kind of committed relationship, not even an open one. In my experience this is almost always a transient state that transitions to either something more serious or goes back to something more casual. That sound like what you're talking about?

I think so. Sometimes people just want to have sex and sometimes people have sex with their good friends, no commitments attached. Maybe like an emotional fluffer with some but not all benefits
