is being afraid of dogs weird? Dx

I've been afraid of larger dogs since forever, since my mom taught me that they could seriously mess you up and to stay away from them at a very young age, and it kinda just stuck with me. Now, whenever I see a loose dog, I try to get away as quickly as possible without running so it won't pounce on me. It doesn't help that a lot of the dogs in my neighborhood are aggressive and recently one attacked my aunt and killed her much smaller dog. I'm becoming less afraid though, I just have to meet the dog when it's calm.

Actually surprisingly enough, I am wary and somewhat skittish around small dogs but I love big dogs.. kinda strange really, but i guess my neighbors dog that kept chasing me didn't help (he was tiny)

It's understandable to be afraid of dogs, especially big ones. I used to be afraid of them when I was younger. However I've come to realize that usually the bigger the dog is, the calmer/nicer it is. I think it's due to their larger size that they have less energy and are therefore more likely to tire and may be aware of this. I say this because I notice the bigger the dog is, the more they pant (which usually signifies they're hot and/or tired) This could be a tip to anyone afraid of dogs.

Nah, it's not weird, people have their reasons of fearing certain animals, as well as just getting over it by chance or something else happening in their life. I was afraid of dogs up until I was 14 and got a massive sized dog and trained him myself. Since then I haven't been afraid of dogs since. Mostly because of training mine I learned more about them.

Phobias are phobias. It's nothing to be embarrassed about; it's a part of you. You just need to either overcome it if you can, or find ways to manage it so that it doesn't cause you dysfunction in life.
