Coming out of the Otaku closet

precipace
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lVCkky4yTI A cute little thing from the seiyuu for Kirino and Kuroneko, which led me to wonder... how many people are out? I'm not. I mean, my close friends very obviously know ("Let's go to a movie" "I can't.... I just spent $150 on manga.") but nobody from work or school has any idea. I mean using my real picture for this site even made me a little wary.

I am out of the closet! After years of getting bullied for nothing i realized that hiding what i loved would be ludicrous. People actually found it cool in middle school. And high school, no body cares. My acquaintances barely watch anime... they mainly watch Pokemon, or mainstream anime and will shove them down my throat even when i tell them i don't like them.. but meh. (I'm too paranoid to keep my actual pictures as a avatar, i just used my art as a avatar picture. )

In my school no one even now about such a thing as anime. :(

When I came out of the otaku closet, my friends and family were shocked, appalled, flabbergasted... Which is to say they immediately started buying me anime for holidays. lol. Honestly I don't think I was ever in the closet about it, I just lacked resources to really indulge myself. Now that I have some resources, I'm in an anime and manga frenzy.

For me it's really a matter of not wanting strangers at work to have their perceptions of me coloured. Also my parents are very much against it, so I tend to keep it out of the way, as I'd rather not have the fight.

I can understand that sentiment, precipace, though I will suggest that, for the people at work... Well, it's none of their business anyway. But I do know what it's like for parents to disapprove. While my folks are fine with the otaku stuff, there are other elements of my life where there's a bit of friction. But that's the blessing of communities on the internet. Here, you don't have to hide a thing, because we're all just as crazy as you :) lol. Regardless of whatever philosophical differences we may have, we're all otaku. We've got your back ;)

When I was 9 I was obsessed with Sailor Moon, and got bullied BIG TIME for it, but looking back at it, It's funny because I didn't even get into Sailor Moon, I got into Yu Yu Hakusho and Dragonball Z because of Sailor Moon. And then EVERYONE started to like Sailor Moon like 4 years after I got bullied for liking it, I was a hipster in my school LOL.

I started out. I created an anime club in high school. Was always fairly die hard fan and never really cared what folks thought. If ya were truly a friend someones lifestyle should not change that, well unless sonething like ya find out your buddie is Dexter or something. But I can understand some people wanting to hide that they like are otaku cause they are worried what others will think. It is just a confidence issue and it is tough one to tacle.

I been out from the start. Nobody didn't really care. Me and friend of mine were the only one that like anime. We then found more people and ended up making a club. lol. It been a blast. :D

^ This. I grew up on cartoons, period, and by the time I'd noticed the difference [between anime and cartoons], I was already a fan of several series. I couldn't even tell you my very first. What I COULD tell you, though, was that by the time I separated 'cartoon' from 'anime', I noticed a divide in opinions; either you were with it, or you HATED it. I was just...always with it. It's to the point where I honestly, for the life of me, can't grasp why in lots of circles 'cartoons' are ok, but 'anime' isn't (and quite frankly, vice versa). But yeah, I've ended relationships because of the whole 'anime is the same thing as cartoons' on top of the 'cartoons are for children...let's watch Family Guy instead' mentality. Impossible for us to click without years of...conditioning (and that's only getting to square one...what if she also likes auto-tune? #FML). #missedthepoint #uselesshashtags
