I was popular in middle school but shit changed in high school, and ever since high school I never made an irl friend. So, as of this post, it's been about nine years since I've had an irl friend. But even in middle school, I barely had friends or social contact with people. I grew up as a selective mute and terrible diagnosed social anxiety and depression for which I have been on medication for years, so I consider myself somewhat as a feral child. Both mental disorders make it difficult for me to make friends irl and my social skills, while not terrible, are still underdeveloped. My online friends keep me sane and I have plenty of friends online for which I am thankful for.

As for why some people have no friends at all, I figure it could be out of shyness or the inability to make friends from their own initiative. Some people have a difficult time making friends. I've seen quite a few of them online and have been able to befriend them. There are a lot of possible reasons as to why they do not have friends.

Do you think if us weeb/otakus had an island for ourselves we'd still have this problem? It would be our utopia? For me at least, I have no friends because I have no interest in normies lol but I love talking to otakus.

I think there is a line when you can call someone a friend. Not like it's a problem or anything. But thinking into it deeply having social interactions will still give you sanity just as much as friends. In my opinion, the biggest difference how you treat them.
