I never agreed with that concept of men being more infantile today because we don't have the old social structure. Men had a lot more emotional support then. Besides that plenty of bad things happened. The idea of manhood is a myth. It's an impossible ideal that no man will ever live up to. It's just a archetype to teach boys so they are more willing to hunt, do dangerous work, and fight in wars. Yet they come back with injuries, ptsd, and hardened feelings. Then self medicate with alcohol. Modern society has changed a lot and a lot of those things men normally did is done much better by machines. Men typically didn't follow a preorganized plan that modern society has. They usually learned on the job through apprenticeship. Men have to find a new way to be their best self.

I would think that it wasn't until recently that we started looking at the effects of war and PTSD that men would have received emotional support. And even this support I speak of is very specialized. What of the people who do not go to war? There's still plenty of people who have suffered some kind of abuse or trauma that need mental health help and even when it's caught early on, if it was some sort of child abuse or domestic abuse, the help offered by social welfare or the judicial system is still not enough. (Just ruminating here.) This guy went on some deep tangents and his boner for Jung was showing (understandable, I too have a Jung boner), but the fact that he took it from an anthropologic standpoint as opposed to the modern western societal standpoint is what I found interesting. Trying to make that connection to the decline of masculinity from the way our civilization has evolved from earning manhood via trials and rights of passage rather than relying simply on biology. @verucassault men who went hunting and/or warfare came home to their tribes. Life was more communal then. So they had a lot of emotional support. Seeing atleast seven people you know is a good way to prevent mental illness. I noticed the lack of a father figure in that video. It was only about the mother. It just shows what I say that society does not value father's. If a man sits shoulder to shoulder with other guys drinking beer and watching sweaty muscular men slapping each other's asses and hugging each other while throwing a ball around no one questions their masculinity. Yet on national television Mr. Rogers was asked if he was gay. There was even a rumor he was a navy seal. The man who thought critically about how to nuture children in a healthy way has his masculinity doubted. A good father figure is not valued. The barbarian who can spill the blood of other people is much more respected in society. That little fairy tale super man the video was painting who was secure and noble is a lie. A horrible lie that is so etched in men it's no wonder we suffer so much. Good riddance, we deserve it for our savagery.

@kuharido Yeah, he was making a good point with what he was rolling with but I think it got derailed on his odeipus complex which took up about half of the video.

i guess its the worlds weakness that its not manly as it could be. to me its not a weakness because i dont need to be manly. i see how the world needs it.

What is it to be manly, anyways? Like choco brought up, Mr.Rogers was a man and achieved greatness/respect by not even following societal standards of what being a man meant. Hell, he had black gay man bathe his feet in a swimming pool with him(He knew the guy was gay, but told him not to tell people seeing as that would've been WAY more controversial than it already was to have a black and a white man bathe thier feet in a kiddie pool. This was in the sixties, after all.). There's somewhere between animal and current societal trends that lay both what it is to he a man and a woman. We are by far not doing things as we evolved for and I think that has caused all sorts of mental issues, some positive, but a lot more toxic. Gotta go the speed limit for a reason...

But what does him being gay have to do with being manly? In my eyes a man is a defender, he stands up for his beliefs never backs down, never gives in. All the other societal expectations, are just expectations. You can cry if you want and still be a man, i dont cry simply because its a waste of energy and doesnt chage the situation. But if you wanna cry then cry. But then we can also branch off on topics such as femininity and masculinity which i think have different meanings. But i hate that men everywhere suffer in silence because of this expectation they have to do this or that to be a man. Nah.

@hell_hound7 he wasn't gay. He was asked the question in the 70's and back then asking a man if he was gay was an insult and doubt to his masculinity. It's only recently that has changed. I was making a point that being a good father isn't valued unlike being a violent man.
