Oh. I finally get to participate a little bit in these debates. Heh.
I'm with jayashr and verucassault on this. This is such a major decision at a young age. I also think 18 is still too young to make major life decisions too, but at least it is the agreed upon age of adulthood for most things by law.
It would be nice, but knowing how the population thinks lowly of science these days, I doubt long term research proving that children get their gender identity right by a specific young age and proof they do not regret that change when they are adults will unlikely not change the minds of voters. It would at least change my view of it though if there are several of them proving that children are unlikely to regret it when they become adults.

the thing is you have to way the effects and see which is more harmful
with puberty blockers there is no lasting affects and the side effects are minimal, and you can stop at any time
however, if you don't go on puberty blockers and you do have body dysphoria you can not undue what puberty has done to your body
a transwoman will forever have wide shoulders and a masculine face, you have to shave bones down to fix this
the risk of having no puberty blockers is a body that could drive you to suicide (thanks to societal standards on female and male bodies, the harassment nonpassing trans people face coupled with the mental illness of dysphoria often pushes them to suicide)
where as the risk of taking puberty blockers is maybe insomnia and muscle cramps (which are already side effects of puberty)
i just don't see how the two options are even comparable, and the choice should be given to the child

I will need to read up about the puberty blockers and if there is at least a 10 year literature about it and I'll try to get back at you about my opinion then.
Responding to the next post you put, I agree about not terminating the pregnancy ONLY IF the courts actually did their jobs without religious influence. However, I read enough articles about Judges using their belief in God to hand out sentences that does not make any sense.
That's also a red state AND it's Florida. I'm actually surprised this bill does not sound crazier. It will pass coz it's Florida.

go back a page or two, i linked stlouis children's hospitals site and they talk about the puberty blockers they provide (which are the industry standard)
can i see research that they do have lasting effects? because iv only ever seen it being said (on medical sites) that there is no lasting effects
if there was i would not support them, but because, from what iv seen, your simply pausing your puberty and can unpause it once off the blockers it seems like the healthier option
again its comparing something that you can come off of with no lasting effects to having to live in a body you despite for the rest of your life, and this is the angle people need to see this from
the fact that without puberty blockers someone has to live in a body with extremely male features (such as bigger jawbone, sloped forehead, narrow hips and broad shoulders) when they feel they are a woman
or for a transman to look in the mirror and see tits and larger hips
why make someone have to spend the rest of there lives with irreversible changes to their body when you can put them on puberty blockers (which they can come off of at any time) and when their 18 they can elect to have the surgery

Luckily for you, I work with the medical industry so I was able quickly read up the two primary drugs for puberty blockers.
You are right. Except for a few life changes and supplements to avoid some of the side effects of puberty blockers, the drugs seem to be pretty safe. It is easy to identify this when it is listed as an essential medicine to have by the WHO. However, it only has that approval for Leuprorelin. The other one, Histrelin, is not approved here in the United States for transgender children. They are both medications for cancer originally btw.
Just to lighten up the mood, an off label use for these medications could be to increase the height of the kids. So I guess if I have children I will manipulate them into taking this for a year or two so they can be taller than their old man...hypothetically xD
BTW, there is no long term research completed yet at this time regarding attitudes and mental health of people who did transition at this time. I was reading it very fast, but it looks like it just started around 2010. I doubt it will be ready this year or even next year. Looks like Europe is the one who is leading this research as well.

oh, i didnt know that! yeah the research when it comes to transgender drugs is still so new, its a shame
that's why i don't have a really strong opinion on trans people in sports, because the effects of hormone replacement drugs are still being studied
hopefully there will be more information and better drugs to help transgender children so they don't have to grow into a body they don't identify with

I found the motherlode on research but you either have to buy each article, $37 for this in particular, or have a subscription. Looks like a shared researcher/doc database.
