If I still had my iphone 6 I could give you all kinds of juicy estimates I made about how many people were defrauding SNAP and medicaid benefits in my county from when I worked there. Even furthered the calculations to what it would be state wide based on the number of households receiving assistances for various programs. But that was 5 years ago. Long gone and 2 phones since then.
The people that need the most help are the elderly and they are the least likely to get it.
The people most likely to lie for benefits are those who have been on it since they were teenagers or younger. It becomes a crutch.
And it's also estimated that it takes 3 generations before poverty is cured from a household. People need assistance, but there also needs to be a limit for using it as a crutch.
I've always been for controlled birth. Probably a couple of old threads on here from talking about it before. I feel like that's a better solution. Stop the ignorant and impoverished from breeding. Sounds extreme, but it would also fix a lot of problems.

but i would say that national statistics speak better then your county
i can say sure, your county is 50 leeches, but that says nothing to my broader argument that the majority are not 'leeches'
i am also for regulations on who can qualify for these benefits. like i am 100% for people on unemployment having mandatory drug testing, and things like that
but i just cant agree that even 50% are leaching off the system unless i can see it (iv tried to gather the info myself but all i could find was the single mothers on unemployment thing, which was a positive article in my favor, as well as the turn over of immigrants that went from using government assistance to being sustainable on their own, which again is favorable)

Let's put it this way, fraud happens so frequently, and the most common offense is not reporting new income, that there are guidelines in place that if it occured within a certain time frame of the households renewing for benefits, and if the amount is less than a set amount, the state will not persue charges. Otherwise, it would be far too many for them to process.
That was something we were working on trying to automate more when I was leaving. Everything was going to computers. Eventually, the only people working in social work will be those that actually have to do home visits for welfare/abuse checks.

hmmm, thats interesting
i guess i would propose that them not reporting their income actually says more about our shitty social system than it does about someones character
if that person is on a program like snaps and they come into 100 dollars higher then their previous occupation and they just hit the line that kicks them out of the program, what if that 100 still isn't enough to sustain him or his family?
my mom had a similar situation where she juuuuuust barely got over the tax bracket for tax cuts when obama was president, and she was really pissed about it because she really needed them but she just barely went over it
like the system does incentivize people to not get better jobs sometimes BECAUSE that job still wouldn't cover what they need to live, but it would kick them out of the program theyr on.
so i would say we need reform in which people can move up and still use these systems, just maybe a gradual lessening instead of dropping them all together

so if im on welfare, i need it to afford food, but my job offers me a higher position and ill make more money
but its just enough of a bonus that would kick me off my programs but still leave me basically poor
why would i take that job? that's hella risky choice for someone to make
or they take the job and fib on documents
i think it just reflects more on a damaged system then the people that are forced to use that system

If it kicks them out of the income bracket, the benefits have to stop but depending on the time frame of their first full check and the deadline for next month's benefit distribution, they might actually get benefits for one or two more months after reporting the new income.
However, if they report new income and they still qualify, their monthly benefit amount wouldn't change until their next review. Reviews happen every 6 months.
And you are correct. People instead of getting a promotion or a better job would turn it down instead of losing their benefits. Sometimes the calculations would actually work in their favor to receive benefits vs a better job. However, if you could sustain any of the jobs worth having in the area, you were going to benefit more from getting that job than keeping benefits. You know, unless you have like 3-6 kids. Which was typically the case.

You know what really sucks though about all of this is how much funding goes into social programs like these vs how much is spent on defense. We would probably not even make ourselves vulnerable if we shifted a quarter of those funds to social programs.
But the US has to be the Global Police and go give Democracy to the world in exchange for I dunno... oil or resources.

this is to assume the average person is a rational actor, which they are not
hence why conservatives exist
my assertion is that these people arent leeches, but are caught in a system that fucks them frontwards and backwards
also i would say that the majority of people don't have children for tax cuts, but even if they DID that's a good thing
that's one reason why they get tax cuts, as an incentive to have kids because of issues like social security as well as more bodies to fill more jobs so businesses can expand
so big gobment wants you to pump out kids, the issue is its lower income people that do it
i don't think they do it to game the system but because of poor sex education and lack of resources of things like abortion
if we look at this pragmatically we cant tell them to stop having kids, that doesn't work
we cant kick them off welfare or make cuts to it
but we can make abortions more easily accessible

lol If you went to the bible belt giving out free abortions you would get fucked up. People in those kinds of places don't want that.
