Well, first off; In guy speech, the way he was using the word "Shit" wasn't literal, but rather meaning something along the lines of "Stuff".
For example, when one of my friends asks if I sense anything in the area, and I sense a lot of non-human spiritual entities, I will generally say "Yeah, there's a lot of shit here."
Now as for the part where he said fuck off, it sounded like you hit a nerve there. Like its not cool on his part, I'm in no way excusing him. But I don't know. He might feel things are moving too fast, he might have trouble speaking from the heart and get hyper defensive about it, or maybe he's stressed out about something. I don't know the guy so I can't say.
If you're looking for who's right or wrong, I can't answer that. Like clearly I wouldn't be cool if someone treated me the way he treated you, but I can only speak from my own read on the situation, and I confess I don't know enough to give an affirmative answer.

He sounds defensive as hell. I mean he could apologoze to you, but he might have had some past problems in his family when it comes to "marriage" related subjects.

Not saying sorry, works until you are British and you say sorry all the time out of habit more so than anything.

This is something that I do as well. Still trying my hardest to break that habit. ;^^
