ill start by saying its been 4 year since i watched re:zero, so my memory is slightly foggy on some things, so feel free to remind me on certain aspects also, i wanna also debate why kumo is better, not just subarus character so do you care about kumo spoilers? just like spoilers for re;zero will help me understand subarus power and why he doesn't miss his family, which are two of my biggest gripes, you'd understand why kumo actually handles this perfectly https://turb0translation.blogspot.com/2015/06/kumo-desuga-nanika-chapter-1.html (if you wanna read it for free) but if you don't want spoilers i totally understand, and encourage you to read the manga/LN to find out for yourself cause its really great "Maybe watch some analysis videos on Subaru's character. Subaru the Subaru you seen in all of season one isnt him. Thats him pretending to be the hero of the story." If i need to watch an analysis video on his character to und3erstand it then its not written well enough to translate on its own. I know that he wanted to be the protagonist of his own fantasy, I'm pretty sure he states it in the anime. That explains why he tries so hard, which I somewhat respect, but like most things in Re;Zero, it ends up being half baked and falling flat. In the world hes in there is no "ignoring your problems" because hes had to kill himself how many times? He doesn't run from his problems, he faces them head on, hence the whole 'hero of my own story' motivation in the start of the anime. But that falls apart when he fights the Sloth guy and becomes broken by him. Because he becomes broken but still ends up recovering in the end, and after that hes normal Subaru. There are NO LASTING EFFECTS FROM HIS FIGHT WITH SLOTH! IT GAVE US 0 CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT! PRE SLOTH BREAKDOWN AND POST SUBARU ARE THE SAME PERSON! Hell, season one Subaru and season two Subaru are cookie cutter versions! They are the same person! Homura had to do the exact same this Subaru did. She had to kill herself to go back in time. I don't know if you've seen Puella, if not i recommend it, but she starts out as a cute, shy, weak girl, but because she watches her best friends die over and over and over and over and having to kill herself over and over and over and over, she becomes callosed. She gains physical power because of having to fight over and over again and goes from being the weakest girl to the strongest because of all the combat. Her character also develops because of the mental tole that she put underneath, having to harden and steel herself to cope with whats going on, having to become stronger and stronger in hopes of saving her friends. And when she does snap, (spoilers from the second movie don't read if you haven't seen it) she becomes the very thing shes been fighting against, she becomes a witch and forcefully captures her friends, keeping them safe inside of her. (end of spoiler) When Homura breaks she stays broken, and her desperation is personified into herself. THAT is a good character. That is a character that has to change to fit their circumstances. That is everything Subaru should be but isn't. Tell me one thing, why does Subaru not miss the sweet, amazing parents he has? Why when he was isekaied did he not once miss them or even think about them?

I am just amazed that someone can claim Subaru has zero character development when entire sub plots exist that show he is fundamentally a different person from when he started. I think the reason Panda suggested am analysis video isn't because Subaru is too hard to understand for most people but specifically because you are missing vital points about him that is obvious to the rest of us. A video does better than text as it can show scenes from the show while explaining the meaning. This isn't to say that you are incapable of understanding it otherwise but much of the time people go into different shows expecting different things. I actually did not like re:zero the first time I saw it until a friend told me that I was not even understanding the show for what it actually is. Now it is one of my favorite shows of all time.

I only say go watch the analysis video BECAUSE you cant see what im seeing and we watched the same show. If you didnt care anything about the show you wont take the time to understand it. Subaru isnt fine, he isnt ok, he does have character development which is why in season 2 you see the aftermath of that. Up until the last episode where he vows not to use return by death anymore and face his problems head on. I dont want spoilers for spider girl cuz i enjoy the anime but to say it is more detailed and in depth character wise than subaru from what i see is a big fat no. People who argue subaru has no character development are missing the subtleties. When Subaru yells at emilia to be grateful for him saving her. It was because he was frustrated at how despite doing so much for her (which she cant see) she doesnt care. Emilia has gotten character development after Subaru has gotten his. people saying Subaru reverts back to his old self is a lie he doesnt. Not everyone is an edgey sausuke, or kaneki. Irl its usually the funny people who deal with depression and issues at home. They just mask their sorrows with being upbeat and the center of attention. Its all a distraction. Whichbis what subaru is doing, distracting himself from all the bad times he has faced. He even explains how all of it has made him feel. If you seriously took the time to watch the anime and not just WATCH the anime. You would see the complete picture.

i don't want to watch a video, you can explain what the video says. That's the point of a debate, use the points in the video. And I said i liked the world building, and actually I adored the first ep. I really wanted to like this anime (this was back before isekai became a water down over used genre, I use to enjoy isekai) Give me explains of PTSD that he faced after his fight with Sloth. You cant just say "actually WATCH the anime" you have to build your own case, you have to tell me what I missed. Also he says he won't return by death but doesn't he do that exact thing the first ep of season two? My issue is if he is dealing with underlying issues, he never shows it. Blowing up at Emilia for not being appreciative isn't good enough. We are talking about Subaru being in a catatonic state because of a mental breakdown, what symptoms of ptsd does he show afterwards?? Also kk, I don't blame ya, but in that case, you cant state Subaru is better than Wakaba because you have no idea what is going on with Wakaba. For all you know I could be correct, that Kumo desu ga nani ka IS actually better plot wise, so you can't state that it isn't. It's strodingers isekai atm. So I'll ask again. If Subaru is such an in-depth and well rounded character, why did he not miss his inarguably amazing parents all of first season? Why were they never once mentioned and why was he happy to be isekaied and be away from them? It wasn't just they weren't mentioned, Subaru was HAPPY to be isekaied. And by extension, unbothered by never being able to see them again. He never even thought about them. Why is this if he's such a great, well thought out character?

@hell_hound7 oh, btw i was wrong somewhat about jujutsu kaisen i kept watching it and I'm on ep 10 and it really does get better, calling it a weak anime wasn't fair it starts off weak but definitely gets better it still is a rip off of chainsaw man, but the plot does diversify somewhat with good, original characters

You ever hear the phrase you don't know what you got until it's gone? On day one he was living out a fantasy followed by a horror show for the entirety of season 1 screen time. I don't think parents would immediately come to mind. There are more reasons but that is a good enough.

"you don't know what you got until it's gone" would mean he took his awesome parents for granted and when he got isekaied and lost them he missed them he doesn't they arent even mentioned once in season one, hes just happy to have been isekaied and then wrapped up in that world he never missed the other world he took for granted so its not a case of 'dont know what you got til its gone' its poor writing that every isekai (except for kumo) uses

Ok so the anime doesnt actually give us the days as reference points. We dont know whether thisbhas happened over the course of a year or a few weeks. Maybe there are hints at it. Sure but like season 2 only a few days actually passed between the start and then the eventual point we are rn. Subaru not missing his old life isnt a good enough excuse to write off his entire character and the isekai at all. Subaru lived a life of constantly being his dad's shadow and wanted to escape. He became a neet and stopped going to scholl as a result. He didnt want to live up to be just like his dad. The whole arc like this explains why he is trying his hardest to be the protagonist. Its not that he doesnt miss his parents he was running away from his old life. Living the isekai paradise. But it was a nightmare for him. Him not wanting to go back has nothing to do with that nor this. I cant explain his character over text because its just too long. I have the perfect video that literally tears apart every single isekai anime in that genre. Because unlike other anime that have unrealistic portrayals of insanity this one has a real touch. You dont act insane 100% of the time. At times you are normal until you have an episode. The beetleguese PTSD isnt so much PTSD at that but the fact he dies and has to see his loved ones die and suffer and then they have no recollection of anything but he still remembers. Its what druves him to insanity in scenes like him bashing his head against the ground.
