alright dyad
i believe that to survive a zombie apocalypse you need to bug in with the bare essentials
-a book on forestry so you know whats edible and whats not
-a bow with reuseable arrows
-a dog for companionship and extra security
-a remote cabin, preferably in a cold location (zombies can not function in the cold)
-and the very bare essentials for survival beyond that point such as pots and blankets and what not
what do you think is the best way to survive

As far as the zombie apocalypse, the smartest idea would be to hunker down in a remote area with good visibility of the area. With enough skill, you could survive off the land. With rifles at hand you could fend off the relatively small number of zombies that would trickle into this area. Simply put I don't have enough ammunition to deal with the 100,000+ people in my current city if a total infection were to happen. My grandma's town only has a population of 1,500 with kilometres between houses in some cases. If the entire population were to be infected I would have the ability to defend the property if I had the proper preparations as well as collaborate with other households.
But finding an area and waiting in it would be my go-to choice. If we are talking zombies from the most probable way they will exist, you simply have to wait it out and they will die of starvation or exhaustion. I estimate about 6 months before they die out completely due to lack of food and whatever virus or bacteria caused the infection is now inert on their dead bodies. Of course there are many kinds of zombie, if the Return of the Living Dead zombies were a thing, we'd be totally screwed no matter what.
While we agree on the remote area, I think the items taken are where we disagree. I argue the firearm over the bow and arrow. While an arrow is reusable, it suffers from being far shorter range. I am accurate out to 500 yards with my choice rifle, but with a bow and arrow it drops to about 50-75 yards. I would also pack as much food, water and tools as possible since when I get to the area I'm going to hunker down in I need to get to work immediately. I will have to work quickly in order to get defenses up as well as get things started for food foraging and production. I do have to ask, is the 5 item limit still in effect from that zombie thread a while back?

oh i thouhgt you were for bugging out, not in
so our biggest disagreement is on weapons
my issue with guns is that ammo is not something you can produce by hand, so your going to have to go out to find more, and so will everyone else
its the same issue with having a car, its good protection and gets you places faster but it also leaves you with a big target on your back due to lack of stealth as well as needing a lot of fuel
I could change my bow to crossbow for more accuracy, and still have the reuseable factor
worst comes to worst I make my own bows, but your guns will be useless without ammo
(edit sorry, no I don't think there's an item limit with this, just to be as realistic as possible)

My primary argument of guns over crossbow is range. You want to stay as far away from a zombie as possible lest it gets in range to attack or you could end up infected via blood spray. I don't have to worry about ammunition since I have brass reloading tools as well as a stock of around 5,000 rounds of ammunition plus reloading for a good 4,000 if the brass is still in good condition.
The crossbow would be a good backup weapon, but the bulk of zombie cleansing would ideally be done by a firearm. With the right kind of ammunition you can cause a lot more damage than an arrow or crossbow bolt thanks to cavitation and hollowpoint ammunition transferring more energy on impact. Meaning a higher chance of one shot being one kill.
On top of things, lets say you have to deal with a group of zombies. Let's say 10. With a crossbow you have around 75 yards to deal with them before they get too close. Reloading a crossbow takes between 10 and 30 seconds, depending on model. In 10 seconds a zombie can cover between 3 and 8 yards per reload, plus aiming time. So by the time you get to the last few zombies, they will be on top of you.
With a rifle I can get a good 20 aimed shots per minute off with my Mosin Nagant at a distance of 500 yards. I can afford to miss a few shots. You would need 100 zombies bum rushing me in order to get in the same distance of the crossbow.
As far as using a car to get to the remote area, I'd argue it is a wiser idea. A zombie can only move so quickly and will lose track of you as soon as you get far enough away since most don't seem to have object permanence. Once again you could end up with this if it is Return of the Living Dead.

so yeah each weapon has its ups and its downs
i will be the first to say bows will not kill a zombie on the first strike, as the only functioning part of there brain is gonna be hella hard to hit, even if you geta clean headshot
but this goes for guns too, unless you have a rifle or any other kind of shrap metal esque impact then the gun will also be nearly useless
BUT if your bugging out to a remote location, odds are there wont be any zombies regardless. just humans that will want your cabin/resources
and THATS where crossbow will shine. hunting and defending.
and you bring up a rifle, but not only is the ammo an issue with guns, but the noise
it will attract more zombies, where as a cross bow is quiet enough that it wont be much louder then the normal buzz of the environment
I could use the crossbow as a distraction, hitting a can or something near the zombie to preoccupy it so i can flee
you cant do that with a gun
in closing not only are crossbows and most hand guns innoficent equally with downign a zombie, the noise of one far exceeds the noise of another, which will only attract not only more zombies but also looters, where as the crossbow is silent and can be used strategically
