STGs is what what Japanese refer to shoot 'em ups or shmups. Even an arcade game Strike Gunner STG exists in that genre. Much like they say "belt scroll" while we say "beat 'em up".

FPSes for sure. My childhood was spent with games like Doom, Quake 2 and 3, Unreal, Medal of Honor. It's the need for quick reflexes, thinking on your feet and getting good at rocket jumping that appeals to me. Though I will concede that games like Contra are pretty sweet.

Contra is a run 'n' gun originally an arcade game Konami prefers over what most effing diehard fans addictively prefer and remember, the North American NES port even over the more detailed Famicom and the interesting MSX2 version. Then came Gunstar Heroes hyped by MD/GEN and Treasure fans and Metal Slug by SNK/Neo-Geo fans. The most highly-praised doujin shmup series by ZUN, a former Taito employee. Non-shmups in the series are spinoffs.

Ah. Then yeah, I enjoy shmups too, on those times where I want to punch myself in the eyeballs.
