no good is likely to come of this, but I've a surplus of free time, and can manage some suspension of disbelief for the time being. what sorts of people frequent this site? has anyone had any success meeting people with common interests here? does anyone have a good story of a person they're glad to have met here, or a conversation they enjoyed?

Welcome to the site. Can't really answer much for your questions but I have had nice little discussion with people here. Learned new things and seen some funny stuff, so joining here has been a positive thing.
