"Hey dad, I'm going to an anime convention with some friends this weekend."
"Oh, okay. There's conventions for that?"
"Yup."
"Kay, come back alive."
The rest of otaku culture was broken down and disclosed over the years in an easily digested manner. He's now pretty well versed in my nerdy lifestyle.

I'm trying to remember how it was when I was a teen... I really didn't ask for permission to watch it, I just normally did it on the living room so it was obvious. There was a time though when I used to think that I should explain that to mom so she would make nice comments about it yet I dropped that idiotic idea 'cause she would just nag eternally about THAT being for kids or that I had the devil in me for watching DBZ... One day she asked me when I was gonna stop watching that and I said: NEVER I'll watch my series 'till I'm a granny... She was PLOP. Now it doesn't matter I guess... I grew up, have a job just like everybody else so it's pretty obvious that what I watch has nothing to do with being irresponsible or not being able to carry my life as an adult
So @mereltje222 it's up to you to even try and inform your parents, I kind of remember the feeling of acceptance you may be after... yet is your life and whatever TV program or any other like you have is your decision and usually parents should just live with it

Never had that discussion with my parents. As long as you're a functional member of society, what you watch doesn't matter.
Too each their own. Some people love crime shows. Some love reality TV. Whether it's comedy, scifi, drama, or Anime, it doesn't matter. If you try to explain it to someone who's not into it themselves, they'll just look at you like you're nuts for watching it. Doesn't matter which genre it is.

Not to be harsh but I think your parents won't really care. As long you have any goals in life such as a career path, etc and not being a lazy fuck collecting figurines, etc then it should be all good.

I don't know your family situation but I think they'd be fine with whatever your hobby is as long as you're a productive member of society, like you have a stable job to do and buy whatever you want. That, and keep those waifu pillows in the closet when they enter your house/room.

My parents always supported my interests, even if they knew nothing about the subject. Be it anime, or my decision to get a college degree. Everyone has their own interests, my parents like american TV and don't really care for anime, I prefer anime and dislike american TV. To each their own.

ya Dont. Until your out of highschool. rule of thumb is to not watch anime in front on your parents Ever. talking about it is fine, but once they see what anime is, theyll question the f*ck out of the idea if you should be allowed to watch it or not. as far as anime clothes and stuff goes. just right it off as a japanese cartoon. Once your 18 or out of highschool or at least 17. they most likey wont care to turn you off of it anymore or even bother. i speak from my expierence, and my sisters.
to be fair. My parents dont like the otkau culture or anime at all, and look down upon it and otakus. Never effected me though. before they ever knew what it was, i always watched anime on my laptop in my room, so its not like i ever annouced it to them that i watched it nor did i ever try to hide it. the situation just never came up. all the best stuff was online anyways lol. They just never was aware of anime or otakus existing when i started watching it. My sister however was stupid, and watched it in front of our parents, and *shudders* brought our mother to a anime con with her. BIG mistake. after our mom saw the fat sailorman cosplayers and furries, they really started to looked down upon it and tried to stop here from going to anymore cons and watching anime. Our mom didnt like the way the ppl looked and thought they looked to freaky and didnt want my sister to hang ever hang around ppl like that. so Ya..,
just play it safe, until you have a good hunch whether theyll support you being one or not.
