In order for a free society to work, it needs more then it's people to be free (rights and such). It needs an educated populace, a group capable of making educated decisions on the politics they have been entrusted with. When John Locke said that man is both rational and good, he said it on the good faith that people would be smart enough to make the right choices. Perhaps he was right for people in his time, a time when the state was new and even a minarchist society could work. Today is not that same time however. Today we demand from the state clean water, roads, education, social welfare services (the list goes on and on). My question finally arrives here, has it all become to much to be entrusted to the common people? These topics require educated minds to rule on, else they turn to ruin. Today our common people (assuming you're in the US), could care less for politics in general. They read into anything they see online as truth, without any regard as to if it's true (this is true of the common people in general, not just left or right leaning folks). And on top of it, rights themselves are being made to surrender themselves, as a big state requires the power gained from the common people losing rights, in order to have the power needed to enact what the common people demand of it. So, having said what I have, what say all of you?

Watch Attack on Titan Season 2 episode 27 (since this is an anime forum I'll give an anime reference). The girl's father says something interesting along the lines of the question that I think you're posing.

Libertarianism is a concept that is doomed to failure when brought up against the harshness of the world.
