True Fandom *question*

"What does it mean to be a true fan?" I ask myself this often when I think about my place in the world in general ... and in particularly my place in the anime fandom. I love anime .. just looking at a picture with anime characters on it even if I don't know the show at all makes me smile and happy. My problem though is two fold. Firstly I have a short attention span, ADHD so i find it hard to dedicate myself to something at least to start with but once I get into something I tend to push threw to the end no mater how long but the hard part is starting a new anime to begin with and giving myself that first push to focus my attention on something. And my second problem is my horrible memory, even the anime I love the most (whisper of the heart, wolf children even ranma 1/2 which I find very funny in a old anime way) I don't remember anything from ... I cant tell you the name of a single character from any of those shows or movies .. I"ll never be the type of person to debate which of two characters has a better arch because I'll never be able to name one character from another. For those two reasons I tend to wonder what It means to be a fan of something and would like to ask you that same question" What does It mean to be a true fan of anime?" Or anything to be honest I just want to know if anyone else has this ... issue with feeling like they don't belong in this or any other fandom. I apologize if this is not worded perfectly I do attempt to keep things as clear as I can but I know I make mistakes and tend to type in run on sentences and sometimes its just hard to catch when I'm doing so.

In a way that was my question. What does it mean to be a fan or True fan as in someone who can count themselves apart of the group that is that Fandom whatever it may be. My question more or less was a personal one about what you require of someone to consider them without any input on their part, a fan of something. I'm sure you meet someone in your life that you could recognize something they liked just by what they did or said or even how they talked about a certain subject ^^ that is what I mean by true fan .. someone who can be a fan of something without telling you the are in direct words.
