I've always found Japanese folk music like this fascinating. Those songs that use "pentatonic" scale kind of give a melancholic feeling. Although some people found it creepy, I simply love it!
and it's exciting to see Japanese folk music get incorporated into anime, like in this scene from Ghost in the Shell 2 Innocence

Ooo, I find this quite soothing actually. I've always been a fan of chromatic percussion instruments, and well, percussion in general really. Using instruments to accent the human voice instead of the other way around is also quite pleasing. I also don't see why something can't be both creepy/scary and beautiful.
