I'm more than happy to be selfish of my fiancee and that my fiancee is selfish of me. We benefit from each other while wanting to fuck. Nihilus got it right to an extent. But, I'd argue that being selfish is not inherently wrong nor something to be ashamed of. It's in our nature, absolutely and for good reason. However, I'd argue that being selfish is more complicated than "I want, so I get". It's funny how we take care of those who we are selfish about and in return(hopefully), they'll benefit from you while you benefit from them. It's not strictly about being greedy. Would it be greed to take care of a dying loved one, knowing they have no hope for recovery? Selfish? Perhaps. If by selfish, we look at the happiness another brings us as self gain. No, nothing is done without some sort of gain or hope for gain. But, it's never so simple as to just say "it's nature's way". In short, op, yes, I believe in love and care(They kind of go together.),but it's never truly selfless.

In agreement with Yasshat, its not possible from my experience to be truly 100% free from desire, want, greed, or whatever you want to call it. And that's not really a bad thing. We've obtained a lot from greed. But I personally have seen and experienced love, and I'm not talking about the brain chemicals that produce a euphoria comparable to a dose of drugs which new couples feel, but rather a feeling which transcends one's personal desires and motivations. Yes, I believe its real, no, I don't think everyone actually experiences it in their lifetime (Or even realizes when they are experiencing it), and yes, I believe its much more commonly seen outside of the realm of human mating, where pets, friends, and family are concerned. That does not mean that love can't stem from romance, but human genes are entirely selfish, and so its really hard to differentiate love from biological, mental, and emotional needs. (And why should we? Those are personal needs that we need, right?) It may not be as glamorous as the romantic novels, hollywood, and the shoujo animes make it out to be, but it runs far deeper than what many think it does.
Its just kinda what makes you look at your selfish needs, and look at another person's actual needs, and makes you say "Damn it, I'm not getting anything out of this, but here's to your happiness at least." Were humanity never to have had any notion of love, Society would call this behavior out for what it is. Martyrdom, and insanity. And yet humans always seem to come back to that pattern of behavior when it comes to the things and people that really matter in life. Not only that, but they invest themselves and set themselves in a position where they're inevitably going to take a huge loss eventually. Is humanity inherently insane? Nah, I don't think so. Though that does get tough to argue sometimes.

I propose that there is true love. Indulge me for a second. Even if we are just the basic, instinct driven animals some think we are, then we have a biological imperative to care about one set of people: our children. Also, it has been shown that those who grow up without both a mother and father show significant negative mental effects, which I can attest to, being raised without my mother, who died when I was 5. Thus we can determine without any kind of sentimental or religious reasoning, but proven psychological effects of having only 1 parent or, God forbid, both parents gone, not that there is anything wrong with foster care, it's simply a proven statistic that people have a biological need for a mother and father. This proves from at LEAST a biological and psychological standpoint, there is a large amount of evidence that our children have evolved with parents staying together, which seems to point to monogamy and love in the human family unit.

Also, anyone who has heard of the stories of people like Gandhi, Martin Luther King jr, the Buda, Jesus Christ, Moses, mother Teresa,or the great prophet Muhammad( I hope I can use his name here, and I have nothing but the utmost respect for all religious leaders, even those not listed here, but let's face it. If I were to list every single religious leader here I would probably use like three pages.) ,all of these figures acted completely selflessly at least a few times, and we hold them as ideals to strive for. Christians seek to emulate Jesus, Jews attempt to follow all of the teachings of their Holy book, especially those of Moses, and Muslims try their best to be the best servants to their God( I'm not sure I am allowed to speak his name. I do know what Muslims call him, but I'm trying to be as respectful as possible with these religions and their tennants, so I will refer to him simply as the Muslim God.I am also very sorry if I offended anyone during this, but forgive me please, I only know the basic details of most world religions and I'm trying my best not to blaspheme.) and Buddhists attempt to reach enlightenment. Most of these teachings are centered around love for your fellow man.
