I don't know if is just me but don't you guys think that Anime series are getting shorter and shorter as time goes by? Like before your average anime series was from 26 to 100+ but now we barely get 13 episodes.
I know that shorter animes = less time and less money but what happen to the series like full metal alchemist or going way back Dragon Ball? Now series that really serve to have a more episodes like Noragami or Akatsuhi no Yona dont even get to 26..

You would be best asking someone who works in the industry. I do not have a problem with short anime series' (most of mine are short, although I was disappointed Elfen Lied or Neon Genesis didn't get more) but my problem with newer anime is with series' that have multiple seasons do not release them regularly (Attack on Titan) or release them as a separate series (Sword Art Online). I honestly do not know why they are making newer anime like this, but I would add I actually like more anime from the current decade than the previous one.

Its always about money. It costs alot of money to make a series go up to 12 episodes even more to go to 26. So if you make a 26 episode anime and it doesnt sell well you lose money. Why do that when you can spend money on 12 episodes and if it does well then you come back with a season 2

The 13 episode ones are usually made to sell light novels and manga. Anything after 13, they're trying to sell it as an anime series. If somehow a 13 episode anime gets a second season, it means the manga sold really well and they know that they have an audience that would be more inclined to purchase the anime series.
Other, shorter, animes that seem to have no plot line is mainly funded by companies trying to advertise their products. The most popular example of this would probably be Devil is a Part Timer. It really has no plot line and is mostly comedy and really character driven. A more recent one would be Bakuon in where they promote their motorcycles but also have a very comedy/fan service-esque feel to it to keep the audience interested. Also the one with Kancolle and the new one with the mecha girls (I forgot the name but each episode is like 30 seconds long). These company funded ones use CG for instead of sakuga for their high detailed movements.
I learned most of this from either the anime Shirobako, or, from a panel at Anime Expo last year.

That's a good question. Probably it has to do in large part with budgets & contracts. I think a lot of people aren't fans of filler episodes like those old anime's commonly had. It's always ironic though to see a really good anime only get one season -_- lol

It could be any number of things...the most probable is that the writer couldn't extend his plot beyond what he originally planned (no new ideas, etc...). However, it's also true what the replies above state about cost and such...especially if the anime is not profitable. I think Deadman Wonderland fell into the latter scenario.

Popularity and money, companies won't make more episodes if they know it's only going to be a loss. It is a business after all.
This season has Re:Zero which has 25 episodes to air so it really depends the company.
Also independent companies are less likely to make as much money / episodes as big companies do.

I don't know if all of you will see this;however
, let me just get started by saying this. Thank you for taking the time to read my post!
It is funny how all of us think the say think is all about the money right?;however, do you know what an animator gets for working on an anime? Well let's just said that they get buy by the amount of slides they draw for each episode... So if a series is only 12 episodes long 30 min each episode you done even get enough to support yourself properly.
I don't know exactly how much they get pay but in going to tell you this, our dear animator that put their sweat, blood , and tears into this anime only make cents for each slides! Only cents.. That's just disgraceful and straight out sad.

You gotta understand many of the animators are doing it out of passion. Look at one punch man the anime got the normal budget of any 12 episode anime but the quality does look like a bunch of crap cause the animators poured their blood sweat and tears into that anime. All because they liked the story and the manga. Its not always about money even though thats how the world works. The manga-ka who make manga work around the clock to make deadlines its not like they had to choose that as a job its cause they wanted to. its their dream yes they get paid barely anything but sometimes anime sales flop. alot goes into making an anime. They gotta pay voice actors, pay to get an OST, pay the animators, pay for advertising, pay for utilites being used while an anime is in production. All of this an anime isnt even big in japan. if you watch anime your considered a nerd down there.

If you're truly interested in learning more about the anime industry, I highly urge you to watch Shirobako. It's slice of life and like adult moe? But it does give you the hardships of working in the anime industry
