I am the mask and the mask is me. I and my personality is the amalgamation of all the people I've met and interacted with.

I think the mask idea is fairly accurate, if not a little too melodramatic for me to swallow.
Realistically, I think it's a bit more fair to say that people have multiple facets to their personalities. Everyone's got stuff that they don't want to share even with their best buds; that's not called having a mask, it's called having good sense; certain things aren't really meant to be shared, yeah?
Animekid's the one that's making the most sense to me right now. I'm not really one for big groups, but as a result of my life's experiences, I can interact comfortably with most folks.
The mask idea is certainly one way of going about things, but there's no substitute for being well rounded in my book.

Being yourself is overrated because change happens to you every time, whether you admit it or are aware of it or not. Events and people affect you. You can also be in the process of discovering yourself or reinventing yourself -- and that in itself is a state of "being yourself" at that particular moment. These are types of changes that will eventually (or not) lead you to finding your true self -- whatever that means. You can change tomorrow or in 10 years and people will always have something to say. They might commend you for changing for the better or they could say you're a hypocrite for something as simple as not liking the things you liked yesterday. People are going to say something whether something happens or not happens. Talking is easy. Talking is cheap.
Remember that your process of self-discovery is yours and yours alone. You can choose to care about what others think or not, that is all entirely up to you. Only you can define what stage you are in your life in terms of "being yourself". You admitting that you are still growing (aka finding yourself) is already you "being yourself", if you get what I mean?
But then again, please take everything I say with a grain of salt. This is coming from a person whose colleagues I share a research home with thinks I'm talking to a "boyfriend" late at night using the office wi-fi and not at all spending time on an otaku website, haha! My best mask is my "game face on at work" mask. :P

I prefer 'Be Genuine' over be yourself. It implies you are not being your self which is not often a lie since many people do wear masks for various reasons, even if they do not realize it.
