I don't know what was the border between these two eras. Perhaps it's during the Y2K period.
In the retro era, most people think of early 80s arcades, Atari 2600, NES, SNES and PS1 eras. In the modern era, mostly too many FPS games, Cut The Rope, Angry Birds, Minecraft, etc.
In my opinions, my retro is to the hard-to-reach arcades of the late 80s and whole 90s eras.
For my modern, I mostly focus on what designers of older games are up to now.

An interesting topic.
A Japanese company or an American company made much of a game console in the past mostly.
Why wasn't an original game console born at Europe?

It depends on perspective, I would consider 2000-2005 retro at this point. Modern games have gone off the deep end in my opinion, there are a few I enjoy, but many seem to be regurgitated. Sure, flashier and flashier graphics. Lulzy, and Lulzier themes, and the games for short attention spans. Also, keep in mind that we'll be going into a new era soon. We're at near graphical limitations when we're interfaced with a computer, gameboy, and console. The next big step will be Virtual Reality games, then after that holographic. The downside to all of this is a lack of originality, and the organic nostalgia feel we all grew up with.

Anything underneath the 5th gen is pretty much retro in my eyes.

I consider non-32-bit consoles to be retro, as well as the first generation 32/64-bit consoles like the PSX, N64, Saturn etc. I do not consider the PS2, Dreamcast, Gamecube etc. retro because they were sold in stores from around 2009-2012 for most of them.

When it's divisible roughly, I think a game soft ware will be a turning point to have changed from a rom cartridge to a disc medium.
