Gun Control

Imma necro this serious thread considering current events, and this long arguement i had with a collegue. Thoughts anyone?

I would not feel secure on the US to be honest. But this is coming for someone who is used to live in a country with gun control. I believe no big group of people is free of malicious, impulsive or aggresive individuals, so, when there are guns on the mix...I can't trust on a system like that.

People will always find ways to kill people and at least in the U.S. Guns save far more lives than they ever take. Guns can take 30-50k lives a year, A little over Half of those deaths are all suicide, The next highest percentage is justified shooting from a police officer, Next bit is done overall by gang on gang violence, and finally we down to murders and school shootings. Guns however also in the U.S. Save around 3-5 million lives per year, saving over a hundred times as many as they take. Gun violence is also most prevalent in places with the strictest gun laws. Chicago for example, has HEAVY gun laws yet is the murder capital of the U.S. Most mass shootings are also in gun free zones. Now if the argument is "If one life can be saved from getting rid of guns." Your view is laughable. Because let me tell you things that do far more damage in the U.S. over Guns that should be going first. Medical Surgeries- 700k a year are due to medical errors. Cellphones- Over 400,000 crashes a year due to them. Knives- They kill five times over as many people as any rifle does. And let's all pretend that criminals will suddenly stop getting guns just because they're illegal. I mean, that worked with Murder right!? It's a silly fallacy especially with all the data. If anything more lives would be lost if we banned guns. An armed society is a polite society.

If the country is filled with guns, remove gun is not a good idea, because criminal don't follow the law. If the country has no gun, add gun is not a good idea too, because the population is not accustomed to guns.

@Whisp You shouldn't trust any system. The reason it's in the US constitution that the people have the right to bear arms is because they had no to faith in any kind of government not being coming corrupt. If your government has all the guns, and you have no guns. What the person with the guns says goes. Look at North Korea. Personally I'd prefer a world in which guns had never been invented. But since they were, I'd rather not be unable to defend myself against criminals that do have them. @Leon That the perfect example of why gun control fails in country with existing guns. The criminals don't care about the laws. Killing people is already illegal. They still do it. Why would they care if guns were illegal? It just leaves law bidding citizens defenseless. Personally I think people have become too detached from personal and social responsibility and liability. Is it the guns we need to control? Or is it ourselves? People are quick to shift blame so it's not required that they themselves take responsibility or change.

Leon put it perfectly, it's pretty much what I always say when this topic comes up. Personally I rather live in a country where no one has access to guns, but the guns are already here in the US, good luck getting rid of them. There's just no turning back now. Like others have said too, bans and restrictions only serve to hurt law abiding responsible gun owners, the kind of people who should have weapons. The kind of person who's gonna murder people doesn't give a crap what the magazine limits are and you can bet your ass he'll find a way to get them even if legitimate stores wont sell them. And like Wesley-sensei said, it's a cultural problem. I mean a hammer is just a tool, it makes no sense to blame the hammer if it's owner decides to bash someone's head in with it. Take away the hammer and he'll just use a screw driver instead. What we really need to do is start teaching ethics and morals to kids with mandatory classes in public schools if you ask me. In these times where broken families are the norm and parent's push the responsibility of parenting off onto school, well 'someone' has to teach kids about compassion for their fellow man.
